The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. returned to TV after a one-year hiatus with the 80th Golden Globe Awards, back on the air on NBC, streaming on Peacock and hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael.

Winners from the prominent nominees included top dramatic film “The Fabelmans†and director Steven Spielberg, “The Banshees of Inisherin†(wins for top comedic film, screenplay and actor Colin Farrell ) and “Everything Everywhere All at Once†(Ke Huy Quan was the night’s first winner and Michelle Yeoh won) and TV series “House of the Dragon†as top drama, “Abbott Elementary†(top comedy, lead actress Quinta Brunson and supporting actor Tyler James Williams) and “The White Lotus,†(which took home top honors for a limited series and an actress nod for Jennifer Coolidge). There were also memorable speeches from honorees Ryan Murphy and Eddie Murphy (not related!).

Last year, NBC dropped the broadcast of the 2022 Globes after a Los Angeles Times investigation of the HFPA raised questions about the group’s ethical and financial dealings and also discovered that there were no Black members of the then-87-person assemblage. The association has since approved interim Chief Executive Todd Boehly’s proposal to acquire the Globes, established new bylaws, banned gifts, hired a chief diversity officer and added 21 new members plus 103 international nonmember voters.

For host Jerrod Carmichael, the Golden Globes’ diversity missteps are no laughing matter, as he proved in his pointed opening monologue Tuesday.
