Denver Broncos: Rock, paper ... touchdown
It was a game within a game for the Denver Broncos offense -- and Peyton Manning didn’t even know about it.
The trio of Broncos running backs were feeling so comfortable in Monday night’s 37-21 victory over Oakland, they played a game of rock, paper, scissors to decide who got to blast into the end zone for a one-yard touchdown.
“We were just messing around on the sideline,†running back Ronnie Hillman explained. “Just something to do. Have fun.â€
The play in question came in the fourth quarter after Hillman tore off a 19-yard run that looked to be a touchdown. He was stopped just short of the end zone, however, giving Denver a first and goal at the one.
While officials were reviewing the play to see if Hillman scored, the backs did some sophisticated negotiating over who got to handle short-yardage duties just in case.
Hillman chose rock, and Montee Ball and Knowshon Moreno chose scissors. Rock beats scissors, of course, so Hillman trotted back onto the field and scored on the next play.
Manning, who’s typically all-knowing when it comes to what’s happening on his team, was caught off guard when asked about it afterward.
“I’m confused. Huh?†he said. “I didn’t know that. I didn’t know that.â€
