Bellflower man dies after his car veers off Highway 91 in Cerritos
The 33-year-old driver of a Ford Mustang died, and his female passenger was seriously injured, when the car veered off Highway 91 in Cerritos, crashing into a tree and wall late Friday night, the California Highway Patrol said.
The male driver, Jaime Arzola of Bellflower, was pronounced dead at the scene. The female passenger, Rubi Aidel Arzola, 31, also of Bellflower, was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from her seat. She suffered major injuries and was taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital.
An eyewitness told the CHP that the 2007 Mustang was headed east, just west of Gridley Road, when the vehicle drifted to the right, struck a raised curb on the shoulder and struck “a freeway sign, tree and finally the sound wall before it came to rest,†according to a CHP statement.
The crash occurred around 10:31 p.m., and the driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at 11:01 p.m. by L.A. County paramedics.
An investigation is pending.
