Man arrested after Escondido SWAT standoff
A man who had barricaded himself in a house for five hours Friday night was arrested after an Escondido police SWAT team fired tear gas into the residence.
Phillip Romero, 38, was taken into custody shortly before 9 p.m., said Escondido police Lt. Craig Carter.
Escondido police officers had gone to Romero’s house on Kingston Drive about 4 p.m. to arrest him on a warrant for possession of an illegal weapon, Carter said. Romero fled inside the house and refused to come out.
Other people inside the house safely evacuated. Officers used a bullhorn to order Romero outside and also tried to contact him by phone, but he would not communicate with them, Carter said.
Shortly before 9 p.m., the SWAT team deployed several rounds of tear gas and then entered the house. Romero was found hiding in a closet in a back bedroom, Carter said.
He was arrested on the warrant charge and also will be charged with resisting arrest, the lieutenant said.
