Amid a particularly crowded Broadway season of new plays and musicals, “Stereophonic†and “Hell’s Kitchen†rose to the top as the most-nominated productions for the 2024 Tony Awards on Tuesday morning.

David Adjmi’s play about a 1970s band recording an album and Alicia Keys’ musical recounting her New York upbringing each earned 13 nominations.

Announced live on CBS and on YouTube by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry, the nominations kicked off with the best musical category, in which “Hell’s Kitchen†is joined by “Illinoise,†“The Outsiders,†“Suffs†and “Water for Elephants.†The best play category includes “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding,†“Prayer for the French Republic,†“Stereophonic,†“Mary Jane†and “Mother Play.â€

The 77th Tony Awards, to be hosted again by Ariana DeBose, will take place June 16 at the David H. Koch Theater at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York. The ceremony, presented by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, will air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+. To be considered for awards, productions must have opened between April 28, 2023, and April 25, 2024.

The threat to this year’s Tonys underscored their sway over the industry. Some say making them the ‘be-all, end-all’ of shows’ survival is risky business.
