The owner of Bar Stella was arrested Tuesday morning outside his restaurant on suspicion of shooting bullets into the walls and ceiling of his apartment above the establishment, authorities said.

Gareth Kantner was taken into custody around 12:25 a.m., accused of negligent discharge of a firearm, LAPD Officer David Cuellar told The Times.

Officers arrived at the 3900 block of Sunset Boulevard — where Bar Stella and other restaurants owned by Kantner are located — and heard gunshots coming from an apartment above.

When police went inside, they saw numerous bullet holes in the walls and ceiling of the residence, according to police.

No one was injured, and there were no victims, Cuellar said.

Kantner, who owns Bar Stella as well as the next-door French bistro Cafe Stella, was arrested without incident.

A neighbor who requested anonymity told The Times she woke up around midnight when she heard three distinct gunshots.

Police helicopters flew over the neighborhood, and officers in riot gear descended on Sunset Boulevard and shut down a portion of the street by Intelligentsia coffee shop, which also sits below Kantner’s apartment, she said.

It took a few hours for the boulevard to calm down. Around 2 a.m., the woman said, she went down to Sunset Boulevard and saw about half a dozen police officers arresting Kantner.
