REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST

After losing six friends last year, it’s understandable that Donald Urquhart would turn his attention to the subject of endings. But the London-based artist is looking beyond the somewhat morbid topic of death to the process of “saying goodbye to the past,” as he puts it. For his solo show “The End,” Urquhart expands on this theme by exploring memory as well. For example, the painting “Tarzan and Elephant” (pictured) is based on a publicity shot for a 1930s-era “Tarzan” film. “The show is about letting go of the past, but also realizing that the past never goes away,” Urquhart says. “So even though things end, they don’t really end because you can always remember them.” Ends Feb. 12, Jack Hanley Gallery, 945 Sun Mun Way, L.A.; www.jackhanley .com
