The Orange County debut of soprano Jessye Norman, a mini-festival of six Tchaikovsky symphonies and a commissioned work by American composer Jacob Druckman will be among the highlights of the Orange County Philharmonic Society’s 1991-92 season.

Norman will sing in recital on April 24, 1992, at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa. Pavel Kogan will conduct the Moscow State Symphony in Tchaikovsky’s six numbered symphonies in three concerts, Oct. 4 to 6, 1991, at the Center.

In addition, the society will present the Chieftains, the Irish folk group, at the Center on Dec. 12. “We wanted to have a holiday concert of some sort, and we thought this would be a great way to get into Christmas,†society executive director Erich A. Vollmer said Tuesday in announcing the season at a press conference.

The Druckman premiere will be included on a non-subscription benefit concert by the Los Angeles Philharmonic led by Zubin Mehta on April 25, 1992, at the Center. Thomas Hampson will be baritone soloist.

The society’s 38th season comprises 39 concerts and recitals, including the first county appearances of the Prague Symphony, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Cincinnati Symphony and the Moscow Philharmonic.

The society will offer three subscription series at the Performing Arts Center and two at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. (One of those in Irvine, a joint venture with the Laguna Chamber Music Society, was announced previously.) Other 1991-92 season events include previously announced Mozart Bicentennial concerts by the Angeles Quartet on Sept. 6 and Nov. 7, as well as the Salzburg Marionette Theater appearing Dec. 6 to 8, all at the Irvine theater. These are non-subscription concerts.
