High School Roundup: Chapmans lead Costa Mesa past Estancia

BASEBALL

Costa Mesa 10, Estancia 7

Cameron Chapman went two for four with a grand slam and five runs batted in for the host Mustangs, who evened the Battle for the Bell series on Tuesday.

Carter Chapman went four for four for Costa Mesa, which improved to 3-3 in the Orange Coast League.

The Mustangs (8-9 overall) ended a four-game losing streak to Estancia (8-7, 4-2 in league).

Estancia’s Colin Gardner was two for four, hitting a three-run home run and a two-run homer.

Costa Mesa and Estancia play in the Newport Rib Co. Classic next. The Eagles open the tournament against Soquel at Beckman on Friday at 11:30 a.m., while the Mustangs play host to Carmel on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Battle for the Bell finale between Costa Mesa and Estancia is on May 1 at Angel Stadium at 3:30 p.m.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 11, Beckman 7

The doubles teams of Jacob Cooper and Ryan Wessler, as well as Matt Paulsen and John Hart, both swept for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Pacific Coast League match at CdM.

Diego Fernandez del Valle and Ari Abrams each won two singles sets for CdM (9-3, 4-1 in league), ranked No. 8 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

Beckman is ranked No. 9 in Division 1.

CdM plays at Marina on Wednesday.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Eric Fries scored three goals in the Sea Kings’ game at home on Tuesday.

Kyle Young had two goals for CdM (7-1).

Brennan Greenwald and Jordan Pakzad finished with four ground balls apiece.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor def. Fountain Valley

Dayne Chalmers finished with 12 kills in the visiting Sailors’ 25-21, 25-23, 25-22 sweep in a Sunset League match on Tuesday.

Ethan Talley had nine kills.

The Sailors (19-3, 4-0 in league), ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, play host to No. 9 Huntington Beach on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Newport Harbor 185, Huntington Beach 194

Noah Mayne shot two-over-par 37, the low for the Sailors in the Sunset League match at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course on Tuesday.

Ethan Barnes (38), Ted Perry (39), Matt Smith (40) and Campbell Norris (40) also scored for Newport Harbor (8-2, 6-2 in league), which plays against Corona del Mar on Wednesday back at Mesa Linda.

SOFTBALL

Santiago 3, Los Amigos 1

The Cavaliers (16-1, 2-1 in the Garden Grove League) were held to three runs or less for just the third time this season, but the Lobos (8-9, 1-1) couldn’t come away with the win.

Los Alamitos 15, Newport Harbor 0 (5 innings)

Brianna Jewett and Caitlin Ladd combined on a no-hitter as the Griffins (12-2, 2-0) beat the Sailors (5-12, 0-2) in Sunset League action.

Allisha Martinez and Jazzmyn Loe each had two doubles to lead Los Alamitos.

Huntington Beach 9, Edison 4

Ivy Davis had three hits, including a home run, to lead the Oilers (4-5, 1-1) past the Chargers (8-5, 1-1) in the Sunset League game.

Jadelyn Allchin had a bases-clearing double. Chance Burden added a two-run double, and Kelli Kufta and Megan Ryono had an RBI-single each.

Jaelyn Operana had two diving catches in the outfield.

Brethren Christian 22, Saddleback Valley Christian 11

Senior Ashley Cashman hit a grand slam in the fourth inning, and the Warriors (4-6) mercied Saddleback Valley Christian in the nonleague game on Tuesday.

Pitcher Effie Hill and Sydney Warkentin combined as the Brethren Christian battery.

Newport Harbor 70, Edison 61

Lars Hedendal scored event wins in the sprints and the long jump to help propel the Sailors to a close dual-meet win over Edison on Tuesday.

Spencer Blake swept the throws for Newport Harbor, with Cole Smith not participating in the competition. Smith had strained a pectoral muscle in Saturday’s Trabuco Hills Invitational.

Alexis Garcia earned victories in the 1,600 meters (4 minutes, 30seconds) and 3,200 (9:52). He added a third-place showing in the 800.

Garcia’s Newport Harbor teammate Mark Field won the 800 in 2:00.57, with Edison’s Connor Schwarz coming across two one-hundredths of a second behind him.

Edison’s Michael Chadwick won the boys’ pole vault at 15 feet, 6 inches.

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD

Edison 100, Newport Harbor 36

The Chargers dominated the girls’ competition, 100-36, with four individuals earning two event wins against Newport Harbor on Tuesday.

Amanda Herrington swept the hurdles, which included a lifetime best of 14.93 seconds in the 100 high hurdles. It marked the senior’s first time posting a sub-15-second time in the event.

Cori Hoffer sprinted past the opposition in the 100 (13.04) and the 200 (27.33), while Hannah Hooper won the 800 and the 1,600. Morgan Jackson posted a pair of wins in the shot put and discus.
