High School Roundup: Joyce leads CdM to win

BOYS’ SOCCER

Corona del Mar 3, Northwood 2

IRVINE — Grant Joyce produced two goals and an assist to lead the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League match on Tuesday.

Kyle Mabwa added a goal for CdM (12-3-5, 7-0-2 in league). Matt Katz and Alexander Polly also had assists.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Northwood 53, Corona del Mar 51

Northwood’s Jacob Huynh hit a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, handing the host Sea Kings their first loss in Pacific Coast League play on Tuesday.

The Sea Kings and the defending league champion Timberwolves are in a first-place tie at 8-1. They both close out the regular season at home on Thursday, CdM against Irvine and Northwood against Beckman.

Kevin Kobrine led CdM with 20 points.

Newport Harbor 67, Fountain Valley 59

Collin Pipkin led the visiting Sailors with 18 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in a Sunset League game on Tuesday.

Dayne Chalmers had 17 points for Newport Harbor (15-11, 4-5 in league).

The Sailors, who are in fourth place in league, close out the regular season at home against third-place Huntington Beach on Thursday at 7 p.m. Newport Harbor is one game back of the Oilers.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Ocean View 8, Orange 0

Kaci Montoya scored four goals for the Seahawks in Tuesday’s Golden West League game at Ocean View High.

Analisa Chavez, Angela Vazquez, Emily Cabrera and Taylor Voegelie also scored for Ocean View (7-2 in league).

The Seahawks are tied for first place in league with Westminster, and can clinch a share of the title in the league finale Thursday at Segerstrom.

Fountain Valley 3, Newport Harbor 1

Kylee Wilson scored twice for the Barons and Marissa Lynch added a goal in Tuesday’s Sunset League finale at Costa Mesa High.

Fountain Valley finished the regular season 13-6-2, 4-5-1 in league, good for fifth place. The Barons hope for an at-large berth into the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs.

Newport Harbor finished 14-8-5, 5-5 in league for fourth place, and also hopes for an at-large berth into the Division 2 playoffs.

Huntington Beach 7, Marina 3

Jenna Prince scored two goals for the Oilers in the Sunset League finale for both teams Tuesday night.

Huntington Beach finished the regular season 16-7-5, 6-3-1 in league, tied for second place with Los Alamitos, though the Griffins own the tiebreaker.

Marina finished 0-9-1 in league.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Sunset League

Huntington Beach 62, Marina 39

Frankie Wade-Sanchez had 24 points and Kaylyn Nakaji added 17 as the Oilers (18-7, 8-1) beat the Vikings (10-15, 5-4).

A win at home against Newport Harbor on Wednesday will clinch at least a share of the Sunset League title for Huntington Beach.

Tricia Fukuzawa had a team-high 11 points for Marina.

The Vikings can claim sole-possession of third place in league with a win at Edison (14-11, 4-5).

Academy League

Sage Hill 38, Whitney 28

Sophomore shooting guard Heather Park led the Lightning (14-10, 7-4) with 13 points in a key victory.

Trinity Cha had nine points, and Emily Hublitz had eight.

Sage Hill is now in third place, one game ahead Whitney (13-10, 6-5) and Downey Calvary Chapel (16-7, 6-5) with one game remaining.

St. Margaret’s 43, Brethren Christian 22

The Warriors (5-19, 0-12) finished a winless Academy League campaign.

Golden West League

Ocean View 38, Santa Ana 26

Helen Reynolds had 10 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Seahawks (21-4, 8-1) past the Saints (13-12, 4-5).

Emi Yamasaki had 12 points, and Erica Almiranez scored 11 points in the win, which Ocean View accomplished without a resting Jackie Moss (groin strain).

The Seahawks will host Segerstrom (20-5, 8-1) on Thursday in a game that will decide the Golden West League title.

Pacific Coast League

Corona del Mar 46, Northwood 34

Tatiana Bruening’s 21 points helped the Sea Kings (4-20, 1-9) defeat the Timberwolves (9-15, 2-7).

Samantha Uehara added 12 points for CdM.

Garden Grove League

La Quinta 39, Los Amigos 31

Cheryl Caldera had 15 points for the Lobos (17-6, 4-5), but Los Amigos’ struggles continued in league play.

The Lobos, who won 14 consecutive games in nonleague action, let a five-point lead slip away in the final three minutes.

Annie Truong scored 11 points, and Christie Trinh added 10 for La Quinta (17-7, 7-2).

Sunset League

Los Alamitos 49, Edison 31

Cailyn Crocker continued her sterling sophomore season with a 29-point effort for the Griffins (19-6, 8-1).

Ashley Niemand had 11 points for the Chargers (14-11, 4-5).

Edison hosts Marina in its season finale on Wednesday, a game that will third place in the Sunset League.

Newport Harbor 40, Fountain Valley 34

Lisa Hamilton’s untraditional triple-double pushed the Sailors (8-16, 2-7) past the Barons (6-17, 0-9).

The senior center had 11 points, 21 rebounds, and 10 blocks.

Lexi Alvarez added eight points, nine rebounds, and nine steals. Ashleigh McPhie chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Orange Coast League

Calvary Chapel 42, Estancia 27

Academy League

Oxford Academy 75, Brethren Christian 17

Austyn Masuno scored 17 points with 10 rebounds for the Academy League champion Patriots (18-5, 10-1).

Jessica Holloway and Britney Cuevas each had seven points for the Warriors (5-18, 0-11).
