High School Roundup: Big win for Newport Harbor girls’ soccer

GIRLS’ SOCCER
Newport Harbor 2, Huntington Beach 1 (OT)
Sianna Siemonsma scored the golden goal after stealing a pass back to the keeper, as the Sailors earned the Sunset League win Thursday at Costa Mesa High.
Siemonsma also scored Newport Harbor’s first goal, assisted by Jennifer Garfais. Bryana Esparza made four saves for Newport Harbor.
Newport Harbor improved to 3-3 in league, just a half-game behind both Huntington Beach and Los Alamitos (3-2-1 in league), who are tied for second.
Fountain Valley 1, Los Alamitos 0
Marissa Lynch scored the winning goal as the Barons upset the Griffins in Thursday’s Sunset League game at Fountain Valley High.
Defense from Ally Bebout, Karley Duda, Kate Lehr, Sandy Hawryla and goalie Aysia Buendia helped the Barons (1-4-1 in league) earn their first league win. Los Alamitos came into the week top-ranked in Orange County and CIF Southern Section Division 1.
Corona del Mar 2, Irvine 0
Leah Givant and Ava McKenzie scored the goals for the Sea Kings in Thursday’s Pacific Coast League game.
Trinity Rodman had an assist for CdM (14-0-3, 2-0-2 in league), which has a key game at first-place Northwood on Tuesday.
GIRLS’ WATER POLO
Estancia 7, Los Amigos 3
Katelyn Chesemore scored five goals for the Eagles in Thursday’s nonleague game.
Kalena Shepherd and Hayley Hopp also scored for Estancia.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Huntington Beach 49, Newport Harbor 22
Frankie Wade-Sanchez’s 29 points led the Oilers (14-7, 4-1 in Sunset League) past the Sailors (7-12, 1-4).
Los Alamitos 92, Fountain Valley 24
Cailyn Crocker’s 20 points led a quartet of Griffins to reach double figures in scoring.
Los Alamitos remains the pace-setter in the Sunset League at 16-4, 5-0 in league.
The Barons fell to 6-12 overall, 0-5 in league.
Godinez 51, Costa Mesa 38
In a battle for first place in the Orange Coast League, it was the Grizzlies (12-5, 4-0) that came out on top.
Godinez held a 33-16 lead at halftime and never looked back.
Costa Mesa drops to 7-12 overall, 3-1 in league.
