Governor’s Cup: BYC still in hunt

Through 13 of 22 rounds of the round-robin preliminary competition, the three-member Balboa Yacht Club team is tied for fifth among 12 teams at the 50th Governor’s Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship off Newport Beach.
BYC, skippered by Christophe Killian and including crew Harrison Vandervort and Jack Martin, won three of six races Wednesday and is one point behind the coveted No. 4 spot, as four teams will advance to Friday’s semifinals.
BYC has six points (one for each victory) and is tied with the Del Rey Yacht Club from Marina del Rey in fifth.
With eight round-robin races remaining, the leaders are comprised of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (12), the San Diego Yacht Club (11), the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club of Australia skippered by Sam Gilmour (nine) and the same club’s boat skippered by Lachy Gilmour (seven).
The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (5.75) and the Japan Yacht Match Race Assn. (five) are also in contention for a berth in the semifinals.
Racing continues today, with the semifinals scheduled for Friday and the final slated for Saturday.
