Pepperdine Invitational
MALIBU — UC Irvine went 2-0 in dual-meet scoring at the season-opening event at Pepperdine on Thursday.
Senior Isaiah Thompson was third, covering the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 3.17 seconds to help UCI defeat Pepperdine, 21-39, and top Long Beach State, 20-43.
Brandon Randall was fourth (16:05.37), Izzak Mireles was fifth (16:07.13), Hector Garcia was sixth (16:10.53), Samuel Ayala was eighth (16:13.96) and David Aguilar was ninth (16:14.43) for UCI.
UCI competes next at the UC Riverside Invitational on Sept. 17.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Pepperdine Invitational
MALIBU — UC Irvine went 3-1 in dual-meet scoring in the season-opening event at Pepperdine on Thursday.
Marisa Gonzalez led UCI with a fifth-place finish. She ran the 4,000-meter course in 15 minutes, 36.34 seconds.
UCI defeated Long Beach State (20-43), Pepperdine (20-43) and CSU Bakersfield (17-46), and was topped by USC (30-25).
Anastasia Karnaze was sixth (15:46.56), Megan Mirkhanian was eighth (15:57.62), Keely Boyd was 11th (16:04.31), and Aliyah Shaw was 12th (16:05.97) for UCI.
UCI competes next in the UC Riverside Invitational on Sept. 17.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Nevada 1, UC Irvine 0
RENO — The visiting Anteaters posted a 10-6 advantage in shots, but surrendered a penalty kick in the 98th minute of the nonconference overtime game on Thursday.
UCI fell to 4-1, while Nevada improved to 1-2.
UCI plays host to Pittsburgh on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
Santa Barbara 3, Orange Coast 1
VENTURA – The visiting Pirates surrendered the first two goals in the opening 20 minutes at the Ventura Tournament on Thursday and fell to 1-1 on the season.
It was the season opener for Santa Barbara, which posted a 15-11 shot advantage.
OCC completes the tournament today against West Valley at 3 p.m.
