Briefs: VU’s Lamunu honored

Vanguard University senior Claire Lamunu has been named Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Week in women’s basketball for the third time in January.
Lamunu, a 6-foot-1 post, had 18 points and 11 rebounds in a 71-35 home conference win over Biola on Jan. 24, then produced 21 points and 12 rebounds in Saturday’s 68-62 conference win at San Diego Christian.
Lamunu, a first-year starter, is averaging 23.7 points and 13.4 rebounds, both No. 2 in the NAIA, to help the No. 5-ranked Lions post a 20-1 record, 8-0 in GSAC play through Wednesday.

UCI’s Mitchell lauded
UC Irvine senior McKenna Mitchell has been named Big West Conference Player of the Week in women’s water polo.
Mitchell, who redshirted in 2016, led the Anteaters to a pair of season-opening wins on Saturday in Riverside. She had four goals each in wins over Cal Baptist and Cal State Bakersfield.
Mitchell was twice conference player of the week in 2015.
UCI visits the Stanford Invitational Saturday and Sunday. The ‘Eaters meet Hawaii to open the tournament on Saturday at 9:45 a.m.
