JC Football: Southern League that OCC plays in changes with Santa Ana leaving

The Southern California Football Assn. announced Thursday that Santa Ana College will not compete in the Southern League that includes Orange Coast College, beginning next fall.

Santa Ana appealed to be moved from the more highly regarded American Division to the National Division in the 37-school alliance that divides Southern California teams into six leagues, three in each division.

The Southern League now consists of holdovers OCC, Golden West, Saddleback, Fullerton, Palomar and Grossmont.

Santa Ana was 0-6 in Southern League play each of the last two seasons and had lost 13 straight and 17 of its last 19 games against Southern League foes.

The move may allow OCC to play another nonconference game, though that could be Santa Ana. OCC holds a 34-31 advantage in the series with Santa Ana, the most games the Pirates have played against any rival.

OCC defeated the Dons, 38-17, last season and earned a 36-30 triumph in 2014.
