A water main broke Thursday afternoon in Costa Mesa, sending potable water onto Fairview Road, officials said.
The 12-inch main near Fairview and Bismark Way, in the Mesa North neighborhood, broke at about 12:30 p.m., said Mesa Water District spokeswoman Noelle Collins.
Crews shut off the water by 1:45 p.m., Collins said. The water spilled onto both Fairview and Bismark, causing some damage to the street.

The leak closed northbound Fairview between Baker Street and the 405 Freeway, officials said.
Mesa Water and city crews expect to finish repairs and reopen Fairview Road by Friday, Collins said. About 15 homes along Bismark are without water but service is expected to be restored Thursday evening, according to Collins.
The cause of the break has not been determined. The amount of water that leaked also has not been determined.
