Pet of the Week: Sabina

Sabina, a petite black and white kitten, is what Community Animal Network calls a “rescue quality” cat, with skittish behavior commonly recognized among cats adopted from rescue organizations.

While Community Animal Network specializes in “pet quality” animals who are friendly, sociable and raised in private homes, it also offers “rescue quality” cats for adoption at a lower price.

What is difficult about having a “rescue quality” cat is not that it hides when strangers approach, or that the animal befriends only one person in the family. It is figuring out how to get hold of the cat to trim its nails, transport it to the vet when needed and give it any prescribed medications for treatments.

Local residents who adopt cats from Community Animal Network have the opportunity to receive guidance and have “pre-vet” students come to the home to help give prescribed medications to their cats.

Because Community Animal Network is a vet medical rescue, serving local animals with veterinary care paid for by donations, it can offer “pre-vet” students hands-on experience in handling cats and giving medications prescribed by local veterinarians.

This kind of hands-on experience is valuable to young adults seeking to apply to veterinary school and get jobs in the industry.

Pre-vet students learned how to get skittish Sabina to the vet, who found that her anal glands were impacted, causing discomfort and bleeding.

To donate, send checks to Community Animal Network at P.O. Box 8662, Newport Beach, CA 92658. Note “Help Local Animals” and tax identification number 33-0971560.

Weekend pet adoptions are held at Fashion Island. For adoption information, call (949) 759-3646 or email [email protected].
