Week 2 High School Football Preview: Ocean View vs. Rancho Alamitos

Where/When: 7 p.m. Friday at Bolsa Grande High.

Key Seahawks: Jr. QB Noah Hickman (nine of 14 passing for 145 yards and three TDs; three carries for 66 yards and one TD); Sr. RB Noah De Loera (seven carries for 95 yards and two TDs); Sr. TE/LB Micah Cianca (two tackles, one tackle for a loss, one sack, one INT).

Key Vaqueros: Jr. RB/CB Nathan Kanyavong (16 carries for 142 yards); Jr. QB/DB Cross Faletoi (12 of 23 passing for 162 yards, four TDs, one INT; six carries for 13 yards and one fumble lost); Sr. WR/OLB Erik Maitland (eight catches for 83 yards).

Breakdown: One game is hardly a large enough sample size, but the numbers in Garden Grove Rancho Alamitos’ openers dating back to last season might tell a story. The Vaqueros (1-0) defeated Anaheim Savanna, 25-23, in 2016. That was on par with Rancho Alamitos’ offensive output over its 12 games (24.91 points per game). This year, the Vaqueros won the opener against Savanna, 49-15. Has the Rancho Alamitos attack improved that much, and if so, will the Ocean View defense be as stingy as it has been in the past? All signs point to that being the case, as Ocean View (1-0) opened with a 42-0 shutout of Los Amigos in Week 1. After a four-touchdown performance in Noah Hickman’s debut as a varsity quarterback, Ocean View should feel better about its chances if the game turns into a high-scoring affair. The Seahawks won last year’s meeting with the Vaqueros, 15-10.
