College Roundup: OCC wins state women’s tennis title

Orange Coast 5, De Anza 4
VENTURA – Orange Empire Conference singles champion Karen Trinh won the decisive match at No. 2 singles to propel the Pirates in the California Community College Athletic Assn. title at Ventura College on Tuesday.
Trinh rallied from a 5-2 deficit to win her first set, 7-5, against De Anza’s Mimi Nguyen. Trinh then won the second set, 6-3, to break a 4-4 tie.
Trinh and fellow sophomore Clarisa Colling won, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles, while Colling posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles.
Samantha Newhall also won in singles and doubles for OCC (19-2), the Southern California Regional champion, which won its final 12 matches.
Newhall and JoAnn Taylor won, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles, and Newhall won, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
It was the ninth state title for OCC, the first since 2006.
De Anza, the champion of the Northern California regional, finished 14-2.
SOFTBALL
Santiago Canyon 8, Orange Coast 1
Briana Covarrubias went two for two with one run batted in and Linnea Donahugh was two for three with a stolen base to lead the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Tuesday.
OCC, which won three of its last four, concludes its season 9-29, 5-16 in conference.
Santiago Canyon is 29-10-1, 17-4 and finished second in the OEC.
