Lions name Carrera

For the first time in Vanguard University’s history, a men’s and women’s water polo program will come to fruition. And at the forefront of the entire upstart program will be Ed Carrera.

Carrera, a former Irvine High swimmer and water polo player, will head the men’s and women’s teams starting this fall.

This is the first collegiate head coaching position for Carrera as he recently resigned as the assistant men’s and women’s water polo coach at Concordia University.

“I am extremely excited about the future of Vanguard water polo,” Carrera said in a release. “This is a great fit for me and I look forward to a positive inaugural year.”

Carrera does not lack in the field of head coaching experience.

In 2005, Carrera stepped into the head coaching role at Woodbridge High after two years of assistant duty.

Then, in 2007, he moved over to Northwood High and led his team to a second-place finish in the CIF section playoffs.

Carrera began his water polo career at Irvine High, earning two varsity letters which helped move him to Saddleback College where he was top 10 in scoring, assists and steals in California among community college players.

From there, Carrera had a short stint at Chapman University, but decided to travel to Argentina where he played for the amateur team, Club Gremio.

His time in Argentina lasted two years as he came back to the states and began his coaching career at Woodbridge High.

Carrera has been actively starting the recruiting process in order to get his new program up and running in time for fall training.
