Seahawks come up short in semis

Some might say Timmy Robinson is a hammerhead in the Ocean View baseball team’s lineup.

But the sophomore catcher wears most of the hammers just on his helmet.

This year, Coach Shane Borowski has instituted a sticker system for the helmets, similar to those seen in college football. Robinson, who has two grand slams and a three-run homer this year — all with two outs — is piling up the stickers.

“They’ll get a Seahawk for a stolen base or a drag [bunt], or a star for a great play,” Borowski said. “Well, they get a hammer every time they get a two-out RBI. The only time you can get two stickers on one play is if you hit a home run for a two-out RBI; you get two hammers.

“[Robinson] likes collecting those hammers. He’s leading our team in hammers right now.”

Nobody earned a hammer Tuesday night, though, as the Seahawks fell 8-0 to Woodbridge in the semifinals of the OCNissan Select Invitational at Windrow Park in Irvine.

Ocean View, which had a seven-game winning streak snapped, played Murrieta Valley in the third-place game of the tournament Wednesday.

The Seahawks had trouble against Woodbridge lefty Ben Wylly, who threw a two-hit shutout, scattering hits from Robinson and sophomore right fielder Blake Hitchcock.

Ocean View gave up five runs in the first inning.

For the game, junior starter Blake Walker allowed seven runs, although just four of those were earned.

“When you’re going up against a good pitcher, you’ve got to play good defense,” Borowski said. “When you give a good pitcher like that five runs, it’s going to be tough to claw your way back in.”

Golden West League-leading Ocean View will be at Angel Stadium tonight as well. Borowski said the baseball program has 52 tickets for tonight’s game against the Twins.

They hope to see rookie reliever Alex Burnett get in the game for Minnesota.

Burnett is Robinson’s older brother. He helped pitch Ocean View to the CIF championship during his senior year in 2005.

“That’s a real proud Ocean View moment right there,” Borowski said of going to watch Burnett.

Edison makes semis: The Edison High baseball team advanced to the semifinals of the National Classic baseball tournament, where the Chargers were set to face El Dorado on Wednesday night at Cal State Fullerton.

If Edison won, it would play either Orange Lutheran or Crespi in the tournament title game at 7 p.m. tonight, also at Cal State Fullerton. The National Classic is unique in the sense that teams use wood bats like the pros.

“This is the first time Edison’s ever been in this [tournament],” Coach Steve Lambright said. “I personally think these wood bats have helped our swings. I think it’s more a true test of whether guys can swing the bat or not.”

The Chargers, who lead the Sunset League with a 4-1 league mark, got into the tournament semifinals by winning a pair of games Tuesday. They got past Palm Desert, 5-0, in their opener behind a two-hit shutout from junior lefty Henry Owens.

Owens is now 6-0 and has double-digit strikeouts in every start. Edison then rallied past Bishop Amat, 10-8, on Tuesday afternoon. The Chargers scored all 10 runs in the fifth, spurred on by a pinch-hit, bases-loaded double off the wall by Jonathan Brooks, Lambright said.

Nic Hanson got the win.

“I was proud of their effort,” Lambright said. “The ballclub is going in the right direction.”

Junior shortstop Christian Lopes also won the tournament’s home run derby Saturday, finishing with five home runs.

SOFTBALL

Edison rebounds: Edison and Fountain Valley are both in the Woodbridge Victory Classic tournament, which concludes Saturday at Bill Barber Park in Irvine.

The Chargers had to settle for the silver bracket after losing their first pool-play game to La Habra, 5-4. But once in the silver bracket, they edged Beckman, 1-0, in a quarterfinal game Monday. Freshman Samantha Cordova pitched a two-hitter and senior Courtney Gonzales proved the run, with a solo homer in the sixth.

Edison faces San Clemente in a silver bracket semifinal at 8 a.m. Saturday. A win would put the Chargers in the silver bracket championship game later that day at 5 p.m.

Fountain Valley, meanwhile, is in the bronze bracket after pool-play losses to Orange Lutheran and South Torrance. The Barons fell to Millikan, 1-0, on Monday and have a bronze bracket fifth-place semifinal game against Elsinore at 10:15 a.m. Saturday.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Edison, ranked No. 3 in Division I, swept Marina in a Sunset League match April 1. Game scores were 25-14, 25-23, 25-21. Nick Capriccio had nine kills for the Chargers and Ryan Smith added five.

Edison is now 11-2 and 2-0 in league.

Huntington Beach also stayed perfect in league play after topping Trabuco Hills, 25-13, 25-23, 25-13. The Oilers, ranked No. 4 in Division I, got eight kills from Nick Siegle and five from Andrew Tenbrink.

The Oilers are 7-3, also 2-0 in league.
