Recognizing their bravery

Business and civic leaders will cheer Newport Beach police this morning as part of the 39th annual Police Appreciation Breakfast.
The Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Commodores Club will host the breakfast, which is being presented by Wells Fargo. As many as 60 police officers are expected to show up as honored guests.
“It’s a great opportunity to say thank you for all year long,” said chamber President Richard Luehrs, who has attended the annual police appreciation event during each of the 28 years he has been in office.
He added that the quality of life in Newport Beach is largely due to the police force.
During the appreciation breakfast, merit awards will be handed out to officers, civilians and volunteers who have done outstanding jobs in keeping Newport’s streets safe.
“A lot of people really enjoy it and go every year,” said Newport Beach Police Lt. Craig Fox said, adding that it’s nice to be acknowledged.
Luehrs said he couldn’t offer a sneak peek into which brave acts might be recognized Tuesday, because he didn’t have a clue.
“I won’t find out that until tomorrow. They keep that a closely guarded secret,” Luehrs said.
The event is open to the public. Each ticket is $35, and a sponsor table costs $400. Online registration is closed, but tickets are available by contacting Danica Golden at (949) 729-4414 or [email protected].
The breakfast is set to start at 7:15 a.m. at the Balboa Bay Club & Resort, 1221 W. Coast Hwy. in Newport Beach.
