Gilchrist shares Player of Year nod

Newport Harbor High senior center Kaleigh Gilchrist shared the Sunset League Player of the Year award with Kaley Dodson of Los Alamitos.

Gilchrist led the Sailors (24-6, 5-0 in league) to the league championship and leads a group of five who earned all-league recognition for Newport Harbor.

Gilchrist, bound for USC, led the team in scoring with 94 goals, 46 assists and also contributed 45 steals.

The Sailors, who reached the CIF Southern Section Division I final, had three seniors receive first-team All-Sunset League honors.

They were Kate Klippert, goalie Krissy Burger and Katie Jackson.

Klippert had 57 goals, 26 assists and 43 steals.

Burger had 204 saves and 14 steals.

Jackson had 37 goals, 33 assists and 22 steals.

The Sailors had a senior and a sophomore make the second team.

Senior Colleen McCall finished the season with 33 goals, 18 assists, and 30 steals.

Sophomore Catherine Carpenter had 16 goals, 16 assists and 32 steals.

Eagles, Waldron top picks

Estancia High senior guard Kohl Jones and Costa Mesa senior guard Brian Waldron earned first-team All-Orange Coast League recognition in boys’ basketball.

Estancia senior forward Wes Shaw, and junior forward Davon Joyner were also first-team honorees.

Jones helped the Eagles (15-12, 5-3 in league) to a runner-up finish in league and led the team in scoring with an average of 14.3 points per game.

Waldron, Mustangs ended up last in league with a record of 2-16, 1-7.

Joyner was the second leading scorer on the team averaging 12.2 points per game.

Shaw was the third leading scorer for the Eagles, averaging 10.7 points per game.

The Mustangs’ junior center Andrew Albers received second-team laurels.

Laguna Beach’s Adam Selevan was league MVP.

4 locals on first team

Estancia High junior guard Kassie Stratton led four local players named first-team All-Orange Coast League in girls’ basketball.

Junior guard Yessenia Maldanado also represented Estancia on the first team, while Costa Mesa senior forward Olivia Scheidt and senior center Becky Hunt were also first-team picks.

Stratton led the Eagles (14-13-0, 6-2 in league) in scoring this season, averaging 19 points per game. She helped Estancia finish second in league.

Scheidt led the Mustangs (14-13, 4-4 in league) to a third-place finish in league, as she averaged 16.5 points per game.

Maldanado averaged 5.7 points per game, while Hunt averaged 11 points per game.

Costa Mesa junior guard Itzel Flores was a second-team choice.

Laguna Beach senior Bridget Madrigal was named league MVP.

4 locals on first team

Estancia High junior forward Martin Garcia and Costa Mesa’s Jesus Estrada earned first-team All-Orange Coast League recognition in boys’ soccer.

Three-year varsity starter and senior captain defender Earvin Bahena was also a first-team choice, as was junior teammate J.J. Rodriguez, a midfielder.

Garcia helped the Eagles (14-9-3, 6-2 in league) win the league title. He produced seven goals and five assists.

Estrada led the Mustangs (9-7-2, 3-4-1 in league) to a third-place finish as he had two goals and two assists.

Junior goalkeeper Edward Vega, sophomore defender Alan Anaya, senior midfielder Ricardo Esquivel, and junior midfielder Juan Vences represented Estancia on the second team.

Costa Mesa’s senior midfielder Jose Faboreno and sophomore forward Jorge Sanchez also earned second-team honors.

Bahena was a senior captain and a three-year varsity starter who had three goals and two assists.

Rodriguez led the Eagles in scoring with 12 goals and seven assists.

Calvary Chapel’s Mitch Pfautz was league MVP.

Sage quartet lauded

Sage Hill School sophomore forward Maddie Culberson was one of four Lightning to earn first-team All-Academy League honors in girls’ soccer.

Culberson started all 21 games for the Lightning and was the team’s leading scorer with 15 goals and four assists.

Senior goalkeeper Hanna MacLeod, senior midfielder Jordan Team and senior defender Megan Culberson also garnered first-team recognition. They helped Sage Hill to a second-place finish in league.

MacLeod played in 15 games and started in 12 of them. She finished the season with 63 saves.

Culberson played in 20 games, starting all but one. She had three goals and five assists.

Team played in 19 games and was a starter in 17 of them. She had two assists for the Lightning.

Sophomores Alexa Thomas, Sanna Taskinen and Caroline Grant received second-team recognition.
