Newport Beach City Atty. David R. Hunt was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of felony spousal abuse at his Santa Ana home, police said Monday.
Hunt, 52, was arrested at 8 p.m. Sunday at his home in the 600 block of East Santa Clara Avenue by officers responding to a family disturbance call, said Santa Ana police spokesman Anthony Bertagna.
Hunt had apparently been arguing with his adult son when his wife, 49, tried to intervene.
At that point, Hunt allegedly struck her and, as she fell, she cut her arm on a table and hit her head on the hardwood floor, leaving a large bump, Bertagna said.
His wife was taken to a local hospital.
The Daily Pilot could not confirm the condition of Hunt’s wife, but the Orange County Register reported on its website that she had been treated and released from the hospital.
Hunt was released Monday morning from Orange County Jail, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Department records.
Newport Beach City Manager Dave Kiff said there would be no comment.
A woman who answered the phone at Hunt’s Santa Ana home Monday declined to comment.
Hunt was named Newport Beach city attorney in December 2008.
He and his wife have been married for 27 years, county records show.
