BASEBALL
Doubleheader
SACRAMENTO — UC Irvine earned a split with a 5-3 win in Game 2, after blowing a strong start by All-American Danny Bibona in a 2-1 opening-game loss in nonconference play at Sacramento State Saturday.
Senior Christian Bergman threw a complete-game seven-hitter in the second game, striking out six and walking none.
Ronnie Shaeffer, Francis Larson, Jordan Leyland, Ryan Fisher and Jordan Fox drove in runs in the UCI win, which makes the No. 16-ranked Anteaters 8-6.
In the opener, Bibona allowed two hits and only one unearned run, while striking out 10 in eight innings. But the Hornets (5-7) posted a run against two relievers in the ninth inning for the win.
Evan Brock walked the bases loaded and the winning run scored on a wild pitch by Andy Lines.
Casey Stevenson homered in the first game for UCI, which closes out the series today at 1 p.m.
Doubleheader
LAKESIDE — Visiting Vanguard allowed 31 runs in two games, but managed a Golden State Athletic Conference split Saturday against San Diego Christian at Stars Field.
Vanguard slugged a 19-17 win in the opener, and fell, 14-4, in Game 2.
Brandon Young went three for four with three doubles, five runs batted in and three runs to pace the Lions (19-3, 10-2 in conference) in the opener.
Eric Krzysiak went three for five with three RBIs and Kip Masuda had two hits and four RBIs for the Lions.
Young was three for three with a run scored in the Lions’ loss.
San Diego Christian is 2-13, 2-10.
SOFTBALL
Doubleheader
AZUSA — Visiting Vanguard won the opening game of the Golden State Athletic Conference twin bill, 2-0, but Azusa Pacific posted a 5-4 win in nine innings in Game 2 on Saturday.
Melissa Forrester tossed a three-hit shutout in the Vanguard win, in which Brittany Parlopino went two for three and Angela St. Croix drove in a run.
Forrester went three for four with two RBIs in the second game for the Lions (14-10, 2-4 in conference), but APU (13-11, 2-4) prevailed.
TRACK AND FIELD
Northridge Invitational
NORTHRIDGE — UC Irvine won the men’s and women’s 4X800-meter relays Saturday night.
Cam Mitchell, Tim Murphy, Colin Hacker and Charles Jock posted a time of 7 minutes, 36.08 seconds in the men’s relay.
Chole Fata, Maggie Newton-Neal, Shelby Pock and Amy Green were the women’s winners (9:24.24).
Vanessa Houston (400 in 56.23), Lauren Collins (5-8 3/4 in the high jump) and Natasha Wardley (18-1 in the long jump) finished second in women’s events.
Madeline Leduc (women’s long jump, 17-5 1/4 ) and Justin Carter (men’s triple jump, 47-4 1/2 ) finished third.
Oxy Distance Carnival
LOS ANGELES — Maggie Newton-Neal finished second in the women’s 800 meters to pace UC Irvine performers Friday night at Occidental College.
Newton-Neal’s time was 2 minutes, 15.58 seconds. Chloe Fata (2:16.87) and Shelby Pock (2:17.61) were third and fourth, respectively.
Rex Nelson, a Newport Harbor High product, was third in the men’s 1,500 (3:56.27), while Trevor Smith was third in the men’s 800 (1:54.46).
Andy Burich was fourth in the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:34.77.
MEN’S TENNIS
Vanguard 6, Westmont 3
COSTA MESA — Alessandro Ventre, Lucas Pereira, and Sandro Bucher won in singles and doubles for the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.
Vanguard improved to 4-4, 4-3 in conference.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Vanguard 9, Westmont 0
COSTA MESA — Anna Valingsten and Ekaterina Gabashvili both posted 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, to pace the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.
Vanguard improved to 4-4, 3-4 in conference.
