Coming off an upset, the Edison High girls’ basketball team now faces a long bus ride.
That’s what happens when you’re the 13th seeded team out of 14 in the CIF Southern California Regional Division II championships.
But Edison may have momentum, as it makes a 302-mile trip today to play at Yosemite of Oakhurst in tonight’s second round. For the second straight year, it pulled off an upset of No. 4-seeded West Hills in the first round Tuesday night on the road, as Edison took a 71-52 win.
Junior Bonnie Samuelson scored 31 and freshman sister Karlie added 17. Christina Marquette scored eight, Lauren Grego seven and Rilee Horton added six for the Chargers.
“Our defensive intensity picked up a lot,” Coach Dan Wiley said. “It was a good defensive effort. We had spurts where we played really well We were up by 30-something [points] most of the game.”
If Edison wins tonight, the Chargers would likely play at top-seeded Brea in a regional semifinal Saturday.
BOYS’ SOCCER
For the second straight game, it went to penalty kicks.
And, for the second straight game, the Edison High boys’ soccer team came out on the wrong end of a decision in the first round of the CIF Southern California Regional Division I playoffs Tuesday afternoon at Paramount. Edison fell in penalty kicks, 6-5, after playing to a 2-2 tie in regulation.
The Chargers, who lost to Harvard-Westlake in the CIF Southern Section Division I semifinal on penalty kicks, battled back from a 2-0 halftime deficit against Paramount as juniors Mitch Alvarez and Tyler Bigenho scored goals. But in penalty kicks, they were again denied.
Edison, the Sunset League champion, finished the season 22-6-2.
