Community & Clubs:

Soroptimist International of Newport Harbor Area will present Jocelyn Martinez with its Violet Richardson Award, which honors young women for volunteer action, at 6 p.m. March 17 at the Zonta Club House, in Costa Mesa. The Estancia High School student will receive $1,250 at the awards ceremony.

Jocelyn is an active volunteer with Someone Cares Soup Kitchen, an organization that helps provide the less fortunate with meals, tutoring for children, and gifts for kids during the holidays.

Jocelyn volunteers there because she knew it was the perfect way to help the homeless and hungry children.

She will now advance to the Soroptimist Desert Coast Region level, where a $1,000 Violet Richardson Award recipient will be selected. At that level, an additional $1,000 will be contributed in honor of the recipient to her volunteer organization.

The program culminates with a $2,500 award to the finalist’s volunteer organization.

Soroptimist International of Newport Harbor Area is part of Soroptimist International of the Americas, an international volunteer organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world.

Newport Harbor Area members join with almost 100,000 Soroptimists in about 120 countries and territories to contribute time and financial support to community-based projects benefiting women.

In addition, the club participates in Soroptimist International of the Americas’ major service project, the Women’s Opportunity Awards program, which offers cash grants for women seeking to improve their economic situation through additional training and/or education.

LOOKING FOR SERVICE CLUB HELP

The folks who do the Civil War reenactment at Fairview Park are looking for a group to cook a pancake breakfast for them May 15 and 16.

They asked the Costa Mesa Newport Harbor Lions Club, but that same weekend is their District Convention, said Lions Club member Mike Scheafer.

If you know anyone or any group that can help, call Scott Picha at (949) 515-1835 or (949) 202-7817.

Thought for the day

“People prefer to follow those who help them, not those who intimidate them.”
