Police arrested five people, including an allegedly drunk pedestrian, at a DUI checkpoint in Costa Mesa on Monday night.
While police were working the checkpoint, a man walked up to see what was going on, police said in a news release. He was so drunk, police said, that they concluded he couldn’t care for himself and arrested him for being drunk in public. Authorities said they also saw two people switch driving positions in the car with a passenger out of fear of getting a DUI.
More than 2,000 vehicles went through the checkpoint at Harbor Boulevard and Fair Drive, with police stopping 633.
Of those, police arrested three people for driving under the influence, two for other matters including the pedestrian, and issued 15 tickets. One vehicle was impounded.
