Chinese Purim fest set at Chabad

“Purim In China” will be at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Chabad Jewish Center, featuring a Chinese-themed holiday bash.

The program will be a combination of ancient Jewish traditions with a modern twist, according to Rabbi Eli Goorevitch. “Our goal is to provide innovative holiday programs, yet still keep with the holiday theme.”

The celebration will begin with a multimedia Megillah Reading, followed by a Kosher Chinese buffet, and an array of entertainment and activities including Chinese calligraphy, martial arts by United Studios of Self Defense, Chinese fan decorating, face painting, music and more.

In the spirit of Purim, participants are encouraged to wear costumes. To attend, register at www.chabadoflaguna.com or call (949) 499-0770. The cost for adults is $18; children 3 to 12 years of age, $12.

Purim celebrates the salvation of the Jewish people living in the 4th century from one of the most colorful villains in Jewish history. It is observed by public readings of the Megillah “” “Scroll of Esther” “” sending food to friends, giving gifts of money to the poor, and enjoying a festive meal.

It is also customary to eat a cookie called Hamantashen, a triangular pastry filled with poppy seed or jelly.
