LONG BEACH — The visiting Pirates knocked off the defending state champions, 30-25, 30-20, 30-28, in the nonconference match Friday, ending the Vikings’ 16-match winning streak.

Brad Hemmerling had 15 kills for OCC (3-0), which received 13 kills each from Harrison Carroll and Troy Tomasello.

Paul Leon had 39 assists and libero Harrison Phelps had 12 digs for the winners.

Long Beach is 3-1.

UC Irvine def. Pacific

STOCKTON — Sophomore opposite Carson Clark had 20 kills and a .410 hitting percentage to pace the visiting Anteaters in the 30-21, 30-28, 29-31, 30-22 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory Friday.

Jordan DuFault had 14 kills and five aces and Cory Yoder hit .632 with 12 kills and 11 digs for the No. 11-ranked winners (7-7, 3-6 in conference) .

Anthony Spittle had 55 assists to help UCI hit .367 as a team.

Pacific is 5-8, 0-8.

UCI visits Stanford tonight at 7.

BASEBALL

Vanguard 13, Patten 2

COSTA MESA — First baseman William Hamilton and shortstop Zachary Leighton had three hits each for the Lions in the nonconference game Friday.

Hamilton, who was three for five with a walk, also had four runs batted in and one run, while Leighton, who was three for four with a walk, had three runs and an RBI.

Designated hitter Eric Krzysiak, left fielder Corey Kohnke and second baseman Brandon Pesante had two hits each as part of the Lions’ 15-hit attack.

Starter Javier Perez earned his first win of the season after striking out four, allowing one walk and three hits in six scoreless innings to help Vanguard improve to 4-0.

Patten is 1-6.

The two teams play a doubleheader today at 11 a.m.

LONG BEACH — OCC scored four in the eighth to take an 8-7 lead, but the host Vikings tied it in the eighth and won it in the ninth Friday.

Matt Glazier was two for four with two RBIs to pace a 10-hit attack for OCC (2-1).

A single and an errant pickoff throw put the winning run on third with no outs and Justin Moore singled to end the game and hand reliever Kyle Krogman the loss.

Long Beach is 1-3.

The two teams meet again today at Long Beach at noon.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Irvine Valley 57

COSTA MESA — Samantha Hansen had 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Hansen was 11 for 12 from the foul line and six for 11 from the field to help OCC improve to 16-12, 5-6 in conference.

Alyssa Hanson had 12 points for the Pirates, who shot 50% from the field.

IVC fell to 20-5, 6-4.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Orange Coast 81

COSTA MESA — Chris Curtis had 26 points and Chad Delaney added 20 for the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Delaney made four of seven three-point attempts as OCC (10-16, 4-7) netted 10 of 20 from beyond the arc.

OCC had only six turnovers, while forcing 12 by the Lasers.

IVC is 23-3, 8-2.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

IRVINE — Caitlin Haskell had two goals and Lauren Davies had 10 saves to pace the Anteaters in the nonconference game Friday.

The No. 10-ranked Aztecs (7-3) turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 halftime lead, but UCI improved to 4-3.
