All-CIF honors garnered by locals

Corona del Mar High senior Max Bergeson, junior Chase Watson and Newport Harbor High seniors Blake Kelly and Zach Lucas earned first-team All-CIF Southern Section Division I laurels in boys’ water polo.
Bergeson and Watson helped the Sea Kings (24-6) reach the section semifinals after three straight quarterfinal appearances and Kelly and Lucas led the Sailors (26-5) to the section championship match.
Newport Harbor seniors Matt Russell and Jack Yeager and CdM seniors Michael Liao and Justin Papa made second-team All-CIF Southern Section Division I.
On the third team were Newport Harbor senior Dane Sequeira and CdM senior Blake Terry.
Receiving second-team Division III honors was Estancia junior Charlie Umansky.
Estancia juniors Preston Schow and Conner Graham made the third team.
Bergeson, the Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Dream Team Player of the Year, led all area scorers with 93 goals, and he finished with 47 steals and 24 assists. Bergeson, the two-time Pacific Coast League Player of the Year and a repeat first teamer, went six for eight on five-meter penalty shots.
Kelly led Newport Harbor with 84 goals, and he added 28 steals and 23 assists. The UC Berkeley-bound attacker was named the Sunset League Player of the Year and to the Dream Team.
Lucas, a utility player, finished with 55 goals and contributed 77 steals and 56 assists.
Watson, a 6-foot-7 two-meter player, recorded 68 goals and 16 steals.
Lucas and Watson made the Dream Team as well.
Umansky, Schow and Graham helped the Eagles (18-9) to their first section playoff appearance since 2005. Umansky scored five goals in Estancia’s 14-7 Division III wild-card-round victory against Fontana.
