Patriots Day Parade honorees chosen

The Laguna Beach Patriots Day Parade Assn. has announced the 2010 Honorees for the parade to be at 11 a.m. March 6.

Honorees are:

?Grand Marshal Dee Challis, Pageant of the Masters;

?Honored Patriot Dave Connell, American Legion commander, U.S. Navy;

?Citizens of the Year Dr. Tom Bent and Dr. Korey Jorgensen, Laguna Beach Community Clinic; and

?Junior Citizens Hannah Glass and Austin Giangeruso, Laguna Beach High School class of 2010.

Hortense Miller Gardens compost workshop set

The Friends of the Hortense Miller Gardens will be offering a comprehensive class on composting at the gardens from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Jan. 23. The public is invited to join volunteers in learning how to convert organic waste into valuable soil amendments. The class will be conducted by master gardener Michel Jeunehomme. Building, landscape rules discussed

Builders and landscapers are invited to discuss enforcement of the 2008 California Green Building Code and the Laguna Beach Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance at 3 p.m. Feb. 3 at City Hall, 505 Forest Ave.

“On Nov. 23, 2009, a meeting was held in City Hall regarding the mandatory residential provisions of the GBC that go into effect on March 1, 2010,” City Manager Ken Frank said. “There were many questions at that meeting regarding enforcement procedures for those provisions. At the Feb. 3 meeting, the enforcement procedures will be explained and discussed.”

The City Council adopted a Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance on Dec. 15, and the ordinance becomes effective Feb. 1, Frank said.

$5,000 grant awarded to emergency shelter

The Friendship Shelter has received a $5,000 grant from Laguna Beach residents Paula Mathis and Thomas Ellebie for the emergency shelter at ACT V, Frank reported in his Jan. 8 Friday Update.

The donation was facilitated by the Orange County Community Foundation and the Orange County Community Services Department.

‘Green Valentine’ Festival set for Feb. 12 to 14

The second annual Green Valentine festival will take place Feb. 12, 13 and 14 at Neighborhood Congregational Church, 340 St. Ann’s Drive.

The event is organized by founding President Anna Krajec and event Chairwoman Donna LeClair.

Proceeds will benefit the incorporating and operating of Green Valentine, with 10% going to Joy Ministries and donations made to the Boys & Girls Club and Christofer’s Healing website.

The weekend will begin with a gala dinner at 5 p.m. Feb. 12. Tickets to the gala are $50 and $85 for couples.
