SAILORS GO WITH USC

Newport Harbor High senior Kaleigh Gilchrist signed a letter of intent to play water polo for USC Wednesday morning, Sailors girls’ coach Bill Barnett said.

Senior Colleen McCall also committed to play for the Trojans, joining her older sister, Nicolina, who graduated from Newport Harbor in the spring and is now at USC, Barnett said.

As a junior, Gilchrist earned Daily Pilot Dream Team honors after leading the area in scoring with 97 goals. A second-team All-CIF Southern Section Division I selection, she also produced 72 steals and 48 assists, helping the Sailors to a Sunset League title.

Girlchrist, also a standout surfer, was a first-team All-Sunset League pick who helped Newport Harbor to a 26-8 record and a CIF Division I semifinals appearance.
