Mesa streak on line

Costa Mesa High football coach Jeremy Osso is hoping for the continuation of a perfect world tonight, when the Mustangs play host to Godinez in an Orange Coast League game at 7 at Estancia High.

The Grizzlies (2-5, 0-1 in league) are 0-5 in league games since making their varsity debut last season.

Meanwhile, Costa Mesa has won six straight league contests, including a 27-13 victory over crosstown rival Estancia to open league play Oct. 16.

The Mustangs topped Godinez, 27-14, last season, the only time the Grizzlies have scored in double figures against league competition.

Godinez, which has been outscored, 191-40, in Orange Coast League play the last two seasons, has shown big-play capability this fall. Coach Aaron Kaye’s squad has produced six of its 13 touchdowns on plays of at least 42 yards. Those TDs have come from 91, 76, 74, 61, 48 and 42 yards.

Godinez opened league with a 28-7 setback against Laguna Beach last week.

Costa Mesa has shown greater consistency, particularly in the last two weeks. After scoring 61 points in its first five games combined, Coach Jeremy Osso’s squad has produced 75 points the last two games.

Triggering the Mustangs’ offense has been senior quarterback Todd Davis, as well as senior receivers Brian Waldron and Luis Gomez, and senior running backs Josh Erno and Tyler Sheffner.

Davis has completed 66 of 132 passes this season for 864 yards and six touchdowns. He has thrown just two interceptions.

Waldron (25 catches for 380 yards and two touchdowns) and Gomez (23 for 301 with three TDs) have been Davis’ favorite targets.

Erno has 358 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 58 carries. He took several direct snaps in shotgun formation against Estancia.

Defensively, the Mustangs have also bolstered their game, led by Waldron, an outside linebacker who was the Orange Coast League Defensive Player of the Year as a junior, and senior tackle Travis Whitlock.

Waldron has four interceptions this season.

Erno, an inside linebacker, and Gomez, a cornerback, have also been defensive stalwarts for the Mustangs.

Godinez junior quarterback Victor Silva has thrown for 619 passing yards and five TDs, while former quarterback Moises Esparza has averaged 24.5 yards on 12 receptions.

The Grizzlies and Mustangs have two common opponents this season.

Costa Mesa defeated Saddleback, 28-14, and topped Century, 38-24.

Godinez lost to Saddleback, 35-28, and defeated Century, 31-21.
