Misty to appear at Hermosa

Misty May-Treanor won’t compete in the Hermosa Beach Open, yet she’ll be playing at that beach Sunday, taking on the “Big Sand-eater.”

May-Treanor, a former Newport Harbor High star, will team with Kerri Walsh for a television show, playing against Shaquille O’Neal.

“I just now added Hermosa Beach sand to my salad. I eat sand,” O’Neal said during a news conference with May-Treanor and Walsh, according to the Los Angeles Times.

O’Neal will play with Olympic gold medalist Todd Rogers, and Rogers’ teammate Phil Dalhausser will coach.

If O’Neal loses, he has to walk two miles in a pink Speedo.

Still, May-Treanor will be sure to take it easy. She’s still recovering from an Achilles injury. Walsh, on the other hand, is making her return to the sand after recently delivering a baby boy. She’ll team with fellow new mom Rachel Wacholder.

The “Mom Team” will have to contend against another Newport Harbor alumna, April Ross, and Jen Kessy among others.

The Hermosa Beach Open starts today with qualifying action, which features several locals. The main draw competition begins Friday, when the AVP has a $5 special on tickets.
