Dr. Robert G. Andrews passed
on to the Lord on June ,8,
2009. Dr Andrews was a
resident of Newport Beach for
over 45 years and was a highly
respected and beloved, pediatric
dentist. His last years were
enjoyed in Sebastopol, California.
In August of 2007, Dr
Andrews, while at home, experienced
a fall. Recovery was
long and eventually confined
him to a wheelchair. This Monday morning, with his wife
Patricia at his side, he gently slipped away.
Dr. Andrews was born in Hawaii on December 17, 1921.
His childhood was spent in LaVerne, California, where
he attended Bonita High School and Chaffey College.
He continued his education at the University of Southern
California School of Dentistry. Upon his graduation
in 1944, he was commissioned Lieutenant and served
as a dental officer in the U.S. Navy until 1946. He then
joined the dental practice of his father, the late Charles
L. Andrews, in Costa Mesa, California. His kindness,
sensitivity and caring for the needs of children guided
him as he served multiple generations of children for over
40 years until he retired in 1987 and moved to Northern
California.
Dr. Andrews entered the faculty of the University of
Southern California School of Dentistry in 1953. His
passion for teaching, research and clinical care earned
him accolades not only on the local scene, but on the
international stage, as well. He became the Chairman of
the Department of Pediatric Dentistry in 1962 and within
a short 5 years he established the first advanced pediatric
dental residency and fellowship program on the west
coast. He was a pioneer in the field of dentistry for children
with special health care needs. His advocacy efforts
opened doors that gave access to care for underserved and
underprivileged children through out California.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Leslie
Howell (Richard) of Santa Rosa; Lucia Andrews of Coeur
d’Alene, Idaho; Malcolm Andrews of Santa Rosa; six
grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces
