IRVINE — Starter Daniel Bibona struck out a season-high 11 batters to lead No. 10-ranked UC Irvine to a shutout victory Friday at Anteater Ballpark.
Bibona improved to 3-1 after hurling seven innings, walking two and yielding one hit. The lefty faced the minimum through five innings.
The Anteater pitching staff recorded 15 strikeouts, one shy of the single-game mark of 16 set in 2006.
Catcher Francis Larson helped to break the scoreless tie in the fifth with a one-out triple to left-center. Eric Deragisch double to left to drive in Larson.
UCI (11-5) continues the series today at 1 p.m.

NORTHRIDGE — UC Irvine junior Lauren Collins set a new school record in winning the heptathlon that concluded Friday.
Collins totaled 5,549 points, breaking her previous UCI record of 5,512 set in 2007. Her score at Northridge is an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships at Fayetteville, Ark., June 10-13 and also for the USA Track & Field Championships at Eugene, Ore., June 25-28.
Collins’ marks at the heptathlon in Northridge were 14.20 in the 100-meter hurdles, 5-10 in the high jump, 36-3 in the shot put, 25.41 in the 200 meters, 18-8 in the long jump, 116-3 in the javelin throw and 2:17.27 in the 800 meters.

IRVINE — Senior Greg Thompson placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the Anteaters Friday.
Thompson ran a lifetime best of 9 minutes, 34.56 seconds to qualify for the Big West Conference Championships in May.
UCI’s Matt Lahti placed fourth in the hammer throw with a mark of 162 feet, 3 inches while Kelley Hall was eighth at 151-0.
In the women’s 1500, Samantha Costantini finished fifth in 4:32.45 and Colin Hacker was sixth in the men’s 1500 in 3:54.54. Nick Mosey finished sixth in the 3,000 in 8:37.33.

COSTA MESA — Freshman Yannick Lepage won in the No. 4 singles action in the Pirates’ Orange Empire Conference match Friday.
Lepage also was a winner in No. 2 doubles, teaming up with Brad Fisher, an Estancia High graduate.
OCC is 10-3, 4-2 in conference.
