Everything is coming up green

March 17 “” on Tuesday this year “” is St. Patrick’s Day, also “St. Paddy’s Day,” which celebrates St. Patrick (385-461 AD), one of the patron saints of Ireland. The “feast day” is believed to mark the date of his death, and is also a celebration of Irish history and culture. A national holiday in Ireland, it is an unofficial but highly celebrated holiday in the U.S. Traditionally, people wear green and enjoy Irish delicacies and drinks such as corned beef, cabbage, and Irish beer and whiskey.
Whether you prefer to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day the traditional Irish way, or Hawaiian or Jamaican-style, there’s a venue in Laguna Beach for you. Restaurants and bars around town will offer a variety of green cuisine and drink specials, as well as live music entertainment. Wherever you go, be sure to be seen wearing the green. Slainte!
?Hennessey’s Tavern, 213 Ocean Ave, will celebrate the Irish with their famous “green beer” and discount prices on both domestic and imported beers. There will also be satellite bars and shot girls offering special St. Paddy’s Day cocktails. Performances will be given by singer/ songwriter Kevin Misajon and solo acoustic artist Alice Wallace, an up-and-comer in Laguna. Dance music will be played later in the evening.
“It’s a big night for us,” Hennessey’s manager Jason Daluiski said. “We do it up for St. Patrick’s Day here.”
?Celebrate Hawaiian style with live music entertainment and special Green Lapu Lapus at the Royal Hawaiian, 331 N. Coast Highway.
?The Marine Room, 214 Ocean Ave, will kick off the holiday with their annual bagpipe band. Later on, performances by Joel Rafael, a Woody Guthrie sound-alike who was signed to Jackson Browne’s label and whose own songs have been covered by David Crosby and Graham Nash, and Irish singer/ songwriter Casey Simpson, as part of Beth Woods’ Singer/Songwriters Night.
?To commemorate St. Patrick’s Day, Mozambique Steakhouse, 1740 S. Coast Hwy., will add green drink and beer specials to their weekly Taco Tuesday event. Green chips and salsa verde will also be served all night.
?Ocean Avenue Brewery, 230 Ocean Ave., will offer festive green shots while DJ Rhythm plays throwbacks from the ‘80s and ‘90s.
?Blue Laguna, 696 S. Coast Hwy., will carry Irish drink specials including Irish Car Bombs, Jameson whiskey shots and Guinness/Jameson combos at special prices. Reggae band EEDAY will provide the entertainment.
?The Saloon, 446 S. Coast Highway, will offer St. Patty’s Day drink specials, beginning at happy hour.
?Last but not least, the Susi Q. Center, 380 Third St., invites everyone to join in for a “wee bit of malarkey” and a green lunch at 11:30 a.m. There is a $4 donation for those 60 years and older and the cost is $5.50 for those 59 and younger. Menu: Corned beef sandwich on rye; split pea soup; coleslaw and pistachio pudding. For more information, call (949) 715-5462.
