HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP:

LAWNDALE — Estancia High senior Troy McClanahan scored a career-high 38 points, but the Eagles came up short, losing, 72-71, to host Lawndale in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division IV-A boys’ basketball playoffs Wednesday night.

McClanahan drained 12 three-pointers, but missed his final attempt just before the buzzer, Estancia Coach Agustin Heredia said.

“We had a three-pointer at the end, a great look for Troy McClanahan,” Heredia said. “But unfortunately he missed. [But] he had 12 three-pointers. Amazing performance. What a shame that we couldn’t get a ‘W’ for him. He probably missed only four three-pointers. He was on fire. Everything he touched was going in.”

The Eagles (11-18) were a surprise team to get into the playoffs after losing two Orange Coast League playoff games, but still gaining an at-large berth. Still, Estancia tried to make the most of it with its near upset of Lawndale (19-9)

“The last two weeks they played so hard,” Heredia said of his players. “I’m so proud of these guys. They were playing hard and staying with other teams that were superior.”

Estancia junior Kohl Jones added 19 points. The Eagles led, 62-54, after three quarters, but the Cardinals outscored Estancia, 18-9 in the final period.

LA VERNE — Senior Sean Donovan scored 12 points in what turned out to be the Sea Kings’ finale, as they were ousted from the CIF Division III-A playoffs after the first-round loss Wednesday night.

Steven Gallian, who battled foul trouble and injuries throughout the night, finished with eight points, as did Parker Stone for Corona del Mar (13-14).

“Obviously we didn’t have the season that I expected to have,” CdM Coach Ryan Schachter said. “We had some illnesses and injures in [Pacific Coast League play]. We had some inexperience. Overall, it was a good year. I expect a better year, but we had a tough draw in the playoffs. We played a really good team.”

Bonita improved to 23-5.
