The Huntington Beach High girls’ basketball team picked up a big road victory Tuesday.
Down to just eight available players, the Oilers still had more than enough to score a 52-35 victory over El Toro in Sea View League action. The Oilers turned a 12-9 first-quarter lead into a 21-11 halftime advantage by holding the Chargers to just two points in the second quarter.
The win moved Huntington to 3-2 in league and 16-5 overall.
“That was a really good road win for us,†Huntington Coach Russell McClurg said. “We’ve had some key injuries that have limited us to eight players, but our role players really stepped up and did a great job. So did the players who came off the bench. They really gave some valuable minutes.â€
Freshman Brooke Thomas went four for five from three-point range and finished with a game-high 15 points. Noelani Viloria scored 14 points and Kelsey Minato had 10 points. Meghan White added five points, five steals and was a “monster on the boards,†McClurg said, with 17 rebounds.
Another freshman, center Dana Haley, came off the bench to contribute five rebounds, three blocked shots and two points.
The Oilers are playing without starting second guard Maya Kennedy. The freshman has been out with an ankle injury she suffered in a league game last week.
Huntington begins the second round of league play at 7 tonight at defending league champion Foothill.
Also Tuesday, Ocean View improved to 4-1 in Golden West League play by pummeling host Westminster, 53-24, and Fountain Valley fell behind early against Esperanza and had a late rally fall short in a 47-41 loss to the host Aztecs.
In Ocean View’s win, Rachel Sweezy and Amanda Peukert both scored 12 points.
The Seahawks host Segerstrom at 7 tonight.
Fountain Valley got 11 points from Helena Robel and 10 more from LaRee Reeves. Sami Little had seven points and Kimi Kamada and Nadine Al Smadi both scored six points.
The second round of the Sunset League race begins tonight. League-leader Edison (5-0) travels to Esperanza (3-2) for a 7:30 p.m. tip and Fountain Valley (1-4) is home to second-place Marina (4-1) at 7 p.m.
Both Edison and Marina have been idle since Saturday.
? Boys’ Basketball
Ocean View is halfway home in its bid to win another Golden West League championship. The Seahawks concluded the first half of league play Friday against visiting Westminster, and behind a big game by Avery Johnson and four players in double figures, ripped the Lions, 72-42.
Johnson recorded a triple-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists to go along with four steals to lead the rout. Anthony Brown and Ryan Okwudibonye each scored 13 points and Billy Keller had 12 as Ocean View finished the first half of league play 5-0.
The Seahawks, who played Wednesday at Segerstrom — the score wasn’t available at press time — plays Friday (7 p.m.) at Santa Ana.
Edison: The Chargers begin the second-round of Sunset League play Friday (7 p.m.) hosting Esperanza. In its most recent game Friday, Edison came up with a second-half comeback that eventually fell short against Los Alamitos and suffered a 66-56 defeat. The Chargers’ Ryan Walker topped all scorers with 20 points. Dylan Garrity had 15 points and Jordan Zumwalt 13 points.
Edison is 2-3 in league, one of the losses a 47-43 loss to the Aztecs on the opening night of league play Jan. 9.
Fountain Valley: The Barons picked up their first Sunset League win of the season Friday by winning at Newport Harbor, 34-31. Niles Marquez (14 points) and Chris Lee (13) combined to score 27 of Fountain Valley’s 34 points.
The Barons, now 1-4 in league, play Friday (7 p.m.) at Marina.
Huntington Beach: The Oilers took care of business last Friday against Woodbridge and ran their Sea View League record to 4-0 and overall mark to 17-3, by defeating visiting Woodbridge, 62-48.
The Oilers made sure not to look past a Woodbridge team that had won only one of its first three league games, although the Warriors lost by just three points to Foothill and by two to El Toro in their last two league outings.
Huntington led, 13-11, after one quarter and took a 32-29 lead at the half. The Oilers began to exert control in the third quarter, opened up a 49-42 lead heading into the fourth quarter where they clamped down defensively and limited the Warriors to just six points.
The OIiers’ Zach Kimber led all scorers with 18 points. David Swartz scored 13, Robert Clark nine, Neil Negrete eight, Nick Neser seven and Jordan Castaneda and Mackey Clustka each scored three points.
Huntington, ranked fourth in Division II-AA, played at El Toro, ranked tied for fifth in Division I-A, Wednesday for sole possession of first place in the league standings. The score wasn’t available at press time.
Marina: Prior to playing Los Al Monday, the Vikings went to Esperanza Friday and held on for a 61-59 win over the Aztecs. Tuholds off Esperanza
Marina took a 47-31 on host Esperanza into the fourth quarter then withstood a furious rally by the Aztecs to hold on for a 61-59 victory.
“To get a road win in this league is big and now, we’re 3-0 on the road,†Vikings Coach Roger Holmes aid. “This was a good win.â€
Brendan Holmes connected on five three-point shots and went on to post a game-high 27 points for Marina. Garrett James added 11 points.
On Friday, Marina hosts Fountain Valley and will be out to complete a season sweep of the Barons.
On Jan. 9, the Vikings scored a 61-54 at Fountain Valley to launch a 4-1 start in league play.
