CdM tries to make most of situation in league

When it comes to Pacific Coast League play, Corona del Mar High is in the driver’s seat to win its third straight boys’ basketball championship.

Coach Ryan Schachter said so last week after his Sea Kings saw University lose for the first time in league.

The Sea Kings (11-11, 3-1 in league), ranked No. 15 in the CIF Southern Section Division III-A coaches’ poll, are tied for first place with University and Irvine.

“We win out, we win league outright,” Schachter said.

Round 2 of league action gets underway tonight, when CdM plays host to Laguna Hills (0-4 in league) at 7.

CdM might be without starting guard Austin Quon, who Schachter said suffered a concussion last week. Sophomore Keegan Jakosky played well in the starting role in the Sea Kings’ 52-43 win against Newport Harbor in the Battle of the Bay game Saturday.

Jakosky finished with nine points and three steals.

Schachter said he’s hoping Quon, a junior, can play Friday at Irvine (9-10, 3-1), ranked No. 16.

“We got to take care of business,” Schachter said.
