Breakers begin month on good note

Tuesday marked the beginning of a new month and possibly, a new direction for the Laguna Beach baseball team.

The Breakers picked up their first Orange Coast League win of the season by posting a 12-3 rout over host Estancia.

Laguna had been 0-2 in league play heading into Tuesday’s game. Laguna got off to a strong start in the first two innings, scoring all 12 of their runs in their first two at-bats.

The 12 runs resulted in victory for the Breakers.

“We played a good game in the first couple of innings,” Laguna coach Jeff Sears said. “We’ve got to keep playing like that.”

Although Laguna didn’t score any other runs, solid pitching and key defensive plays stopped the Eagles from scoring in either inning.

“[Zach] Nuno was competing, and that’s how you win games,” Sears said after his starting pitcher struck out seven.

Had the defense not made four errors, they might have held the Eagles to less than three runs.

“It’s hard to win with that many errors,” Sears said.

Casey Miller drove in three runs, Dillon Pierce and Jake Sganga each had two RBIs and Andrew Padden, Gabe Stansbury and Chris Paul each had an RBI.

Defensively, Miller and Stansbury each had eight put-outs.

In previous action, Laguna took on host Anaheim in the Anaheim Lions Tournament, and scored an 8-6 win over the Colonists.

Alex Gillette had four RBI, Dalton Sype had two RBI and Miller drove in a run.

Miller also had six put-outs on defense. Julian Deline and Sype combined on the mound to strikeout five.

The Breakers ended Lions Tournament play with a 2-3 record. They also defeated Cerritos (19-2) but lost to Long Beach Poly (5-4), JW North (12-0) and Valencia (6-3).

Laguna will open play at the Norco Tournament at 1 p.m. on Wednesday against La Sierra at a site to be determined.
