High school brings ‘Urinetown’ to Laguna

Breaking with recent tradition of presenting a dramatic production in the fall, this year the Laguna Beach High School performing arts department, under the direction of Mark Dressler and Amanda Hastings, will present the satirical musical comedy “Urinetown,” winner of three Tony Awards in 2002.

The show presents a biting but hilarious look at many of today’s power interests, both in and outside of government.

“Urinetown” will be presented at the Artists’ Theater, 625 Park Ave., at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9, 10, 15, 16 and 17. Matinees will be at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 11 and 18.

Tickets are $15 reserved, $12 for adults and $10 for students. They go on sale Nov. 5 at the Artists’ Theater Box Office between 4 and 6 p.m., and until 7:30 p.m. on performance days.

Hank Williams arrives

The Laguna Playhouse will present “Hank Williams: Lost Highway” from Nov. 13 to Dec. 16 at the Moulton Theatre, 606 Laguna Canyon Road.

The Off-Broadway hit musical biography, written by Randall Myler and Mark Harelik, will be directed by Myler.

Van Zeiler has been cast in the lead role of Hank Williams, the country music icon.

Zeiler portrayed Williams in previous productions of “Lost Highway” in San Diego, Nashville, New York and Arizona.

He played the title role in “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story” in London and on U.K./U.S. tours.

Other cast members include Mississippi Charles Bevel as Tee-Tot, Margaret Bowman as Mama Lily, Stephen G. Anthony as Hoss, Myk Watford as Jimmy Burrhead, Marc Baczynski as Leon Loudmouth, and Regan Southard as Audrey Williams.

Myler was nominated for a 2003 Outer Critics Circle Award (Best Director) for the musical.

With familiar melodies, including “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” and “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” the show recounts Williams’ journey from backward Alabama to super-stardom at the Grand Ole Opry.

Tickets are $25 to $65. Previews will be Nov. 13-16; the opening-night invitation-only gala will be Nov. 17. Regular performances will be Nov. 18 to Dec. 16.

Rare Disney posters at Laguna Playhouse

Audiences who attend performances of Disney’s “High School Musical: On Stage!” through Nov. 4 at The Laguna Playhouse will be able to view seldom-seen, original posters from Disneyland’s early history.

Huntington Beach resident Jim Owen, who portrays John Lennon in the Beatles tribute band Classical Mystery Tour, has loaned the playhouse 15 rare, silk-screened 3-by-5-foot attraction posters that date back to 1956, the year after Disneyland opened.

Approximately 300 attraction posters of each title were printed because they were constantly replaced due to exposure to the elements. The posters are very rare to find in pristine condition.

Owen started collecting the posters in 1999, after visiting a friend who had some on display.

“I immediately recognized them for what they were, got incredibly excited, and asked him how I could get some,” said Owen, a lifelong Disney fan.

The value of the posters range from $1,500 to as high as $15,000 depending on quality, scarcity and desirability among collectors. A few of Owen’s posters are available for purchase.
