Former Sailor leads domestic Olympic race

Top Assn. of Volleyball Professionals women’s team Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh will be among the athletes being honored tonight at the AVP’s awards banquet for the 2007 season.

Awards, voted on by the players, will be given for best offensive player, best defensive player, rookie of the year, most improved player, most valuable player, and team of the year.

The top men’s team of Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers will also be in attendance. Currently, May-Treanor, a Newport Harbor High product, and Walsh and Dalhausser and Rogers have the lead in securing the No. 1 spot on the women’s and men’s teams which will represent the U.S. at the Beijing Olympics.

May-Treanor and Walsh won a gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics and are the current Fédération Internationale de Volleyball world champions.

The awards ceremony will take place at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.
