RESTAURANT ROUNDUP:

The Five Crowns restaurant in Corona del Mar is replicating a 16th-century dinner this month with one minor change: There will be forks available at the table.
In the Elizabethan era, English diners considered raw fruits and vegetables a health hazard and stewed or boiled them well. Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding were staples of a hearty meal.
Fish simmered on the stove in ale. The Five Crowns, which debuted a special fixed-price menu to coincide with the release of the movie “Elizabeth: The Golden Age,” is providing all of the above — and it’s also offering customers a full array of utensils, which wouldn’t have been the case 400 years ago.
“It’s a great opportunity for dinner and a movie,” said Susan Ballou, a spokeswoman for the Five Crowns. “See ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age,’ and then go to the Five Crowns and have a 16th-century meal.”
The menu, available through Oct. 31, features a choice of entrees between roasted prime ribs of beef in port wine jus with Yorkshire pudding, wild salmon filet simmered in ale with parsley, rosemary and thyme and a side of sherried prunes.
There will also be a compound of — cooked — spinach and red cabbage with assorted fruits and vegetables, as well as a spinach and artichoke pie and rice pudding.
The Five Crowns is at 3801 E. Coast Hwy. in Corona del Mar.

Vegan restaurant plans raw food workshop
118 Degrees, the raw food restaurant that opened at the Camp on Bristol Street this year, has announced plans for a special event Oct. 27 in which families can make pizza and tour other compassion-themed stores around the shopping center.
From 3 to 5 p.m., children and adults can make pizza out of raw ingredients — not including cheese, sausage or pepperoni — and enjoy their delicacies for free. The event will also include a hula-hooping contest and a tour of the restaurant Native Foods and the clothing store Humanitaire.
