Carpenter to sub in for Tipton at Jones Cup

Most would say Big Canyon Country Club’s quintet won’t be at full strength at the eighth annual Jones Cup Thursday at Big Canyon.

But Mike Carpenter will have the last word on that call.

The Jones Cup host will be without Will Tipton, the Big Canyon men’s champion, because he will be out of town. In his place, Carpenter will play along with Bob Lovejoy, Robert Pang, Martha Redfearn and Warren Caves. They wil go up against three other country clubs, Newport Beach, Santa Ana and defending champion Mesa Verde.

Tipton, who finished second in the Costa Mesa City Championship last month after a one-hole playoff, will be out of town on Thursday.

“It’s fine,” said Lovejoy, Big Canyon’s head pro. “I have several good players here. But it’s always disappointing when you don’t have your club champ in. But Mike Carpenter is a very worthy sub.”
