Local team marches to title game

For just the second time in eight years, the Pacific Coast Girls Fastpitch League had a team in a championship game.

At the Santa Ana Father’s Day Blast, the PCGFS 10-and-under girls were victorious in both pool play and three tournament games, earning them the opportunity to play in the championship game of the Santa Ana American Softball Assn. Fastpitch Tournament.

This team doesn’t have any old skipper managing it. The girls have former Major Leaguer Jim Abbott, who used to play for the then-California Angels.

Abbott’s team won three consecutive games on Sunday before falling to Pico Rivera. During the winning streak, Pacific Coast beat French Valley 11-1, Tustin 6-1 and Eastvale 1-0.

The championship game featured a pitchers duel that left the game scoreless into the fifth inning, when Pico finally scored and went on to win.

Pacific Coast was led with precise pitching from Amanda Penna, Savannah Caviston, Maddy Abbott, Kat Perry and Carley Johnson.

Other Pacific Coast girls that had great tournament play were: Keaton Gaughan who went 7-14 at the plate and made four miraculous plays at third base, Brianna Daboub who went 6-13 and caught the entire tournament, Kathy Fisher played excellent defense, Catrell Robertson made consistent contact at the plate and Klarissa Carr played critical defense and hit strategically.

The next tournament for all of the PCGFS is the District Tournament in Aliso Viejo, which is followed by the State Tourney in San Diego in July.

PCGFS has Fall Ball teams that are currently taking registration and will begin in September. If you or your daughter is interested in either Fall Ball or Spring 2008 please contact Tim Owen at (714) 292-5900 or the league website www.pcgfs.org.
