Coffeebreak focuses on Internet

The Oct. 18 PTA Coffeebreak will focus on the pros and cons of social networking websites like MySpace.

Dr. Jerry Weichman, a Newport Beach psychologist who specializes in teen and family issues, will speak at the event, to be held from 8:15 to 10 a.m. at the Surf and Sand Hotel, along with Captain Danell Adams of the Laguna Beach Police Department.

Weichman has spoken at several local high schools on social networking safety issues, discussing the need for balance between a teen’s right to privacy and a parent’s obligation to protect their child.

Adams was involved in a February Internet sting in Laguna that netted 13 arrests in 11 hours. She will walk attendees through a live display of MySpace in real time, logging in as a 14-year-old girl.
