Zeroing in on a title

Heading into the seventh week of the 2006 Pop Warner Football season, the Huntington Beach Jr. Pee Wee Green Chargers have yet to yield a point.

Shutout No. 6 came in impressive fashion Saturday as the Green Chargers dominated the La Mirada White Matadores, 30-0, to run their record in Pee Wee Division play to 6-0.

The defense wasn’t the only facet of the game to star on this day, though.

Trevor Borkowski began the scoring spree with an explosive 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Robert Rice provided the two-point conversion kick to give Huntington an 8-0 lead just 14 seconds into the game.

On the ensuing kickoff, Borkowski recovered a loose ball and that led to a 45-yard touchdown run by Aaron Vargas.

Tyler Warren’s touchdown run and another conversion by Rice with 40 seconds left in the first quarter upped the Green Chargers lead to 22-0.

Alan Vogelsang rushed for the fourth Huntington touchdown and after Jordan Palomino tacked on the conversion, the lead swelled to 30-0.

Warren, Vogelsang, Palomino, Seth Shearer Fox, Matt McKenzie, Charles Mendola and Sam Doxakis combined to rush for more than 360 yards.

The defensive play of McKenzie, Roman Smith, Trevor Loflin, Andrew Mickle, Jesse Kuet and Stone and Steele Escobedo helped limit La Mirada to just 50 yards of offense.

Huntington 24, Santa Margarita 0

The Green Chargers ran their record to 6-0 and sewed up a playoff berth by overpowering visiting Santa Margarita (4-2) at Edison High.

Bryce Campbell’s fumble recovery on Santa Margarita’s first play from scrimmage set up Huntington in scoring position. An ensuing nine-play, 34-yard drive culminated with a one-yard Tanner Greeley TD scamper.

The Green Chargers followed that score by covering 55 yards in eight plays, the final play resulting in a 34-yard scoring pass from quarterback Chris Dubois to fullback Adam Spies to make the score 12-0.

The Green Chargers came up big again when Spies and Steven Springer jarred the ball loose from a Santa Margarita runner, and teammate Joey Sandoval scooped up the fumble and returned it 30 yards for a TD. Huntington took an 18-0 lead at the half.

The defense forced a third fumble at the outset of the second half, a hit by Christopher Ogilive and Christian Miller led to a recovery by Montana Merhoff at the Mustangs 20-yard line. Two players later, Isaah Lumbruno scored on a 17-yard counter-left run to run up the tally to 24-0.

The Green Chargers defense never let up as Tyler Baker came up with a fourth fumble in the fourth quarter.
