Girls under 14

Costa Mesa Code Red 0, Newport Beach 0: Code Red forward Sarah Bramlett had several breakaway runs, but was unable to score against the tough Newport defense. Costa Mesa defenders Jessica Oseguera, Sydney Caffey and Jenny Nava played well, getting two offside calls on Newport to negate goals. Code Red, playing with no substitutes, tired in the second half despite the efforts of midfielders Elizabeth Figueroa, Adriana Gutierrez-Campos, Jade Gonzales and Selina Grant, as well as forwards Vanessa Corona and Brooke Wanbaugh. Goalies Alexa Smith and Grant also played well.

Costa Mesa Blue Vipers 2, Costa Mesa Code Red 1: The game was scoreless in the first half, thanks to great efforts by Code Red goalie Alexa Smith and defenders Jillian Tanner, Sydney Caffey, Jenny Nava and Jessica Oseguera. The Vipers scored first in the third quarter, but Code Red midfielder Amanda Wilson answered. However, the Vipers scored again in the closing minutes to hand Code Red its first defeat. Goalie Hayley Smith, midfielders Jade Gonzales and Adriana Gutierrez-Campos and forward Sarah Bramlett also played well for Code Red.

Boys under 14

(Advanced Play Program)

Costa Mesa 3, Tustin 1: Brian Zamudio, Jordan Young and Gilberto Garcia all scored goals for Mesa, with Garcia’s goal coming on a corner kick. Assists went to Eddy Saavedra and Richard Bello. Defenders Jovany Castillo and Tony Rodriguez held strong, and Christian Rodriguez consistently made nice passes to the forwards. Midfielders Cory Frino, Teddy Prescott and Garcia pushed the ball up the field to teammates Joel Allen, Edgar Rodriguez and Zamudio. Chris Molina also played well on defense, as did goalie Edgar Vega.

Girls under 11 (APP) Costa Mesa 3, Lake Forest 0: Mesa goalie Jamie Krohnfeldt kept the game scoreless in the first quarter, and midfielder Jackie Hubbard jump started the offense with two second-quarter goals on assists by Gracie Dimond. Jackie Tanner also scored for Costa Mesa, which received strong play from forwards Sophie Shambrook, Christina Tuer, Anna Vivanco and Emily Grady. Emily Gruber, Amy Heil, Claudia Huerta and Marlene Calderon played well on defense.

Boys under 8

The Blue Man Group 6, Yellow Dragons 3: Chandler Pearce scored a goal to end the first half for the Blue Man Group, tying the game at 3-all. In the second half, goalies Carson Letterman and Alex Pearce, along with defenders Travis Hastings and Aaron Contreras, held the Yellow Jackets scoreless. Carter Chapman scored the last goal for the Blue Man Group, which also had strong efforts from Jered Acuna, Justin Sandhu and Davis Hombrecher.

Girls under 6

Purple Puppies vs. Green Geckos: Defenders Camryn Carter, Erica Lopes and Kelsey Bond led the Purple Puppies’ defense. Sofia Palma also played good defense and scored a goal. Emily Hoffman, Allison O’ Heany and Lilli Rask led the Puppies on the offensive side.

Boys under 6

Tigers vs. Red Rockets: Kevin Johnson had two incredible blocks for the Tigers and Nathan Guyot made several steals. Nicholas Vargo and Ethan McHenry both made nice passes for the Tigers, and Michael Lara’s assist to Jonathon Suarez scored the Tigers’ only goal of the game.

Girls under 14

Red Bulls 1, Blue Crew 1: Katie Elkins scored the Red Bulls’ first goal with supporting offense from Katie Nall, Katie Ayala and Annesha Usman. Nicole Teale, Kiera Johnsen and Morgan Long were aggressive in the midfield, with support from defensive player Katie Courson, Julia Melendres, Elizabeth Gonzales and Victoria Meer.

Newport Breakers 2, S. Huntington Beach 0: Hannah Roman scored a first-quarter goal for Newport, which added a goal on a free kick by Brinley Siemonsma late in the game. Goalie Layne More helped preserve the shutout.

Newport Breakers 5, CdM 0: Sarah Daly scored two goals for Newport, with Brinley Siemonsma, Madison Mastera and Katherine Maddox each adding a goal. Paige Tennison, Maddox and Mastera had assists, and Layne More and Kirsten Rohan played goalie in the shutout. Newport’s defense, led by Alex Steiner, Hannah Roman, Mollie Friend, Taury Hlinka and Tennison, has allowed only two goals in a six-game stretch.

Girls under 12

Double Bubble 4, Rebels 2: Lauren Yee, Katie Gaiten and Sara Bradbury scored goals for Double Bubble, assisted by forwards Alex Palmer, Sydney Elliott-Brand, Lauren Halle, Michelle Brookes and Breyanna Komadian. Outstanding defense for Double Bubble was led by Elyssa Barnett, Medly Andrade, Dana Siegel and Kailen Locke, and Carly Strutner and Brittany Walker were strong in their positions.

Chilly Pepperz 1, Pink Panthers 1: The Panthers scored first, but the Chilly Pepperz defense of Jenna Jarvis, Sarah Whitney, sweeper Hailey Oberst and goalie Andrea Ocampo remained tough. Brenda Luna’s direct kick then tied the game for the Pepperz. The offense of Olivia Muscatello, Tiffany Curfman, Berkley Van Oostendorp and Kenya Avila continued playing strong, and Rebekah Foster, Hailey Beacham-King and Taylor Chapin provided midfield support. Tyler Stupor also had multiple saves in goal for the Chilly Pepperz.

Boys under 12

Chargers 3, Terminators 2: Charlie Pena, David Munoz and Max Gamboa scored the Chargers’ goals, assisted by Will Laidlaw, Mike Reo, Sam Jones and Marcell De Barros. Chargers goalies Trevor Conway and Seth Siedel led the defense, with help from Josh Ford, CJ Conlan, Peter Doyle and Ian MacInnis.

Girls under 11 (APP)

Cherry Bombs 1, Corona del Mar 0: Christina Arechigo made the winning goal with assists by Nicole Fitzsimons and Savannah Vrbas. Nikki Walsh, Katelyn Mead, Lea Phillips, Kendall Lindsay and Mikayla Swies played strong offense with excellent passing, and Cherry Bombs’ defenders Kathryn De La Torre, Emily Cook, Bailey Rieke, Rosalie Deliz and Ashley Harris also stood out. Goalie Kellie Melendres helped preserve the shutout.

Girls under 10 (APP)

Newport Beach Breakers 3, Corona del Mar 0: Leah Castillo, Brooke Zachary and Cassidy McCullough scored first-half goals for the Breakers. The Newport defense was solid, led by goalie Carlee Kapana, fullbacks Brianna Mahaney, Katie Duhox, McCullough, Haley Burg and sweeper Sammy Yeager. Midfielder Natalie Ward and strikers Sophia Jefferies, Tony Holland and Libby Knight also played well.

Girls under 10

Flaming Hot Cheetos 3, Gator Girls 1: Bowie Viloria scored first in the third quarter, and Gigi Woodall also had two goals in the Cheetos’ win. Annie La Grandeur and Sadie Garner had assists, and Shea Horvath played great in goal for the Cheetos.

Red Angels 5, Wild Cherry Bombs 1: Katie Conway opened the scoring for the Angels on Rachel Whitelegge’s pass, and Kekai Whiford added a first-quarter goal. Emma Griffith scored twice in the second quarter, assisted by Kristin Watanabe, Caylee Talbot and Grace Muenchow. Kierstyn Yardley scored the final goal when she chased down Hannah Tucker’s pass, and Delaney Gastineau, Courtney Cunningham, Katie Kearns and Lauren Bibb also played well for the Angels.

Pink Panthers 2, Soccer Freaks 2: Goalie Noelle Hubbard and defenders Julianna Eifler, Emily Halphide, Stephanie Navarro and Hannah Sanders all played well for the Panthers early. Marina Knutsen tied the game for the Panthers with her third-quarter goal, assisted by great passing from Hannah Doolin, Katya Farinski and Kate Yasko. Lauren Loucks again tied the game in the fourth quarter, and good defense by Panthers goalie Olivia Jones and defender Isabel Leveque kept it that way.

Girls under 8

Big Green Grasshoppers vs. The Sharks: Forwards Claudia Bays, Riley Pardini and Molly Crook all played well for the Grasshoppers. Emily Fletcher gave great assists to her teammates, and Christina Reimers made huge kicks. Emma Kathcart and Ciera D’Alessandro made nice defensive plays for the Grasshoppers, and Hayden Allen showed fancy footwork. Sarah Schones helped Tatum Mcnutt in defending the goal, and Abby Scott kept the ball on the opposite side of the field.

Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. East High Wildcats: Julie Doyle scored a hat trick for the Peppers, with one goal assisted by Destry Comp, and Julia Ackerman also scored twice for the Peppers. Siena Amoroso and Laura Mackenzie played powerful defense in support of goalie Lauren Henke. Rayna Richards hustled at both ends of the field and Heather Roberts repeatedly challenged the Wildcats, winning many tackles. Erika Ellis made several excellent passes, and Alyssa Wilkens gave great support.

Boys under 8

Irish Bulldogs vs. Galaxy Jedis: Jack McClintock scored three times for the Bulldogs, one on a corner kick from Cameron Fournier. Chandler Siemonsma scored twice for the Bulldogs, and A.J. Roth and Colin Avary also found the back of the net. Zach Durham and Tom Phillips also stayed pressuring the goal. The Bulldog defense played well, with defenders Robbie Gehring, Alex Davis, Fara Lependu and Kamran Siddiqui playing tough.

Girls under 7

Newborn Puppies vs. Pink Panthers: Jordan Golden and Holly Nance both scored for the Puppies, and Saylor Nedelman and Skylar Alexander had key assists. Kailyn Kramer and Tristen Warmington showed great dribbling skills and teamwork, and Rylee Warmington played excellent defense and offense. Miranda McCormick and Sydney Palmer helped many Puppies drives to the goal.

Boys under 7

Goblins vs. Rippin’ Waves: Nicholas Nataupsky made some nice passes in the game for the Goblins, defending the ball well. Dillon Lippman had some great runs down the field, and Roy Manwell passed the ball well. Cole Schneider moved the ball well downfield, and Nick Halphide had a nice corner kick and played solid at goalie, as did Tommy Hanle. Matthew Carney had several steals and Tanner Shallahamer made some great passes and played solid defense. Scott Ryder made a header, had four shots on goal and made some nice runs.

Fireballs vs. Mini Manchester United: The Fireballs were short-handed, but the Mini Manchester United showed good sportsmanship and shared players to balance out the teams. Paolo Carrillo-Weisenburger and Matthew Weiss scored goals for the Fireballs, and Rory Sever had a breakaway goal. Seth Roberts, Trevor Cislaw and Aidan Steinke had some great passes and excellent defensive maneuvers.

Boys under 6

Green Raptors vs. Blue Dragons: The Green Raptors showed improved skills, with Wells Baker, John Drake and Ty Markings starring on offense. Joshua Locke, Will Vasquez, Dominick Buscaglio and David Wynne were outstanding on defense.

Girls under 5

Purple Flower Power vs. Hefner: Tyesha Lazcano had a powerful kick to score for Flower Power, and Ellie Terry used her speed to follow the ball all over the field. Kate Honda connected with some large kicks, and Lexi Petrie had fun and blasted a kick of her own. Trinity Goff was always in the mix and had a breakaway.

Sea Turtles vs. Teeny Wahine: Peyton Kassouf scored goals for the Turtles, Megan McGary came close many times and Gretchen Hohenstein, Samantha Griffen and Sasa Klein provided solid support. The Teeny Wahine players provided tough competition and showed true sportsmanship.

Power Puff Girls vs. Lemon Drops: Wendy Sanka started the game off with three consecutive goals for the Power Puff Girls, while Bryton LaPlante showed her great speed on both offense and defense. Mathilde Collins made impressive runs to score two goals and Hailey Kirkup also put her share of goals into the net.

Girls under 10

Tigers 2, O.C. Pirates 0: Amanda Chila and Arabella Watkins scored the Tigers’ two goals, assisted by Lauren Kobayashi. Abigail Klein and Kaitlyn Hicks also worked the field as forwards, and Ally Hadfield led a strong midfield. A strong Tigers defense led by Ally Doherty, Brooke Olson and Sterling Brown kept the Pirates at bay, and Lauren Grable, Sophia Mossman and Jessie Harris played tough as goalies.

Boys under 10 (APP)

Corona del Mar 2, South Irvine 0: Jason Neiger of the CdM Blue Eagles scored two quick goals midway through the first half, and they held up. Ryan Stone assisted the first goal on a great centering pass. Goalie Logan Miller shut out South Irvine, and Ryan Maister, Blake Festo, Justin Hess and Nick Fox were tough on defense. David Karamardian, Nick Premer and Kevin Fultz worked hard at midfield, and Justin Hanson, Timmy Hanson, Jack Klein and Jake Giffin played well on offense.

Girls under 8

Flash vs. Hot Lava Girls: Scoring for the Flash were forward Riley McQuaid and midfielders Haley Hopkins, Alexa Bonanno and Kaylan Knitowski. Gabby Finear and Kelly Kobayashi led a strong Flash defense.

Boys under 8

Ferraris vs. Green Crushers: The Green Crushers started off with a nice over-the-head save by goalie Ryan St. John. Matthew Hamadani and Ethan Sparks had some solid kicks and chest stops, and Garin Friedman scored a goal with assists to Jordan Heinemann and Cole Sudeck. Forwards Brandon Cargile and Darrah Shaygan made great passes, and Logan Niedermayer made big saves in the last quarter.

AYSO Region 10

Vipers take title: The Costa Mesa Under-12 Vipers won the championship game on Sept. 3. at the McMillan Tournament, beating Huntington Beach, 2-0, in the final at the Farm Sports Complex.

Costa Mesa struck first in the second quarter, when Jesse Garcia scored on an assist from Brian Delgadillo. The Vipers scored again in the fourth quarter, as Jesse Paz put the ball in on a breakaway.

Costa Mesa goalie Jake Comer made some strong saves to clinch the shutout. Excellent passing from the Vipers’ Bryan Ruiz, Jonathan Dmitruk, Daniel Cabrera and Sergio Valasco kept Huntington Beach out of possession for most of the game.

Costa Mesa’s defensive unit of Jose Puente, Baggio Dominquez, Kevin Jacobs, Chris Ramirez, Christian Rivera and Brandon Contreras also shined for the Vipers.

Pee Wee Division

Newport-Mesa Seahawks 43, Woodcrest Generals 0: The Seahawks (3-0) overpowered their opponents in an away game on Sept. 23.

Kory Cablay started the scoring for the Newport-Mesa Seahawks, returning an interception 25 yards for a touchdown, with Taylor Parks making a two-point conversion.

Quarterback Chase Forrest then found Levi Stillman open on a 36-yard touchdown pass for the score. Parks added another two-point conversion for a 16-0 Seahawks’ lead.

Cablay rounded out the first half with two more touchdown runs of five and 17 yards, giving the Seahawks a 30-0 halftime advantage.

Linemen Max Meisenheimer, Alex Losoya, Garrett Farthing, Taro Doone and Bronson Gilbert opened holes all day for the Newport-Mesa ground attack, which gained 210 yards.

The defense was led by Kurt Walde, Kenny Drinnon, Chris Johnstone, Farthing and Jeff Carlyle.

Carlyle intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards in the first half, and Johnstone recovered a kickoff to give the Seahawks another scoring opportunity.

Walde, Drinnon and Farthing recorded tackles for a loss.

Carlyle opened up the second half with a one-yard touchdown run, and Forrest threw to receiver Troy Reese for the conversion and a 37-0 lead.

Christian Abbey then led a 50-yard scoring drive.

Walde’s 28-yard touchdown run capped the drive.

The play featured great blocking by the Seahawks’ JP Pilz, Daemon Kane, Victor Valladares, Devin Magana, Nick Gomez, Rafael Corvera and Blake Bowie.

A strong second-half performance by Dylan Rand-Luby, Gilbert, Doone, Cayman Carter, Brad Jarvis, Kyle Benter and Adrian Marin held the Generals to only one first down and minus-four total yards of offense on the day.
